Bridesmaids DVD Review: Funny but not as hilarious as advertised

Bridesmaids has a number of moments that show its sheer comedic genius but its also filled with a number of cricket spurring moments.

Bridesmaids is a moderately entertaining, unorthodox commingling of rauchiness, senselessness and zaniness. The film uses an uncommon approach to comedy that is sparsely laced with moments of comedy however, it doesn’t quite measure up to the hype that surrounded it during its stint in the theaters over this past summer. The movie stars Kristen Wiig (Whip It), Mya Randolph (MacGrubber), Rose Byrne (Insidious), Melissa McCarthy (The Back-Up Plan), Chris O’Dowd (Gulliver’s Travels), John Hamm (The Town), and Terry Crews (The Expendables).

Bridesmaids is a humorous, crude farce about the true test of friendship through time and change. The film uses a jocular approach to tell the story of two lifelong friends whose lives have taken two completely contrasting directions. As one has found a happy and healthy relationship, the other’s life has taken a turn in the opposite direction. This is a comedy that is truly a story of a woman that has lost her way in life. Annie (Wiig) is at a crossroads in her professional and personal life but it all boils to a head when her best friend’s life is set to undergo a drastic change. Annie begins to question the bond between the two as it is tested because of change. At the core of this misleading debacle is the warm story of two friends who‘s lives have taken different directions causing the nature of their childhood friendship to change. After Lillian (Randolph) announces her marriage, Annie discovers the relationship between Helen (Byrne) and Lillian. Soon after, a competition for the bride’s friendship develops. A lot of the humor is focused on the budding rivalry between the childhood friend vs. the now current friend. The film revolves around the jealousy that Annie feels towards Helen as she has become Lillian’s seemingly new best friend.

The film maintains a brief flirtation with being funny while it also teeters on being repugnantly boring. It possesses no middle ground in between the two. The comedy within this film will either have you laughing or completely blank. It’s an overrated debacle has some abrupt flashes of comedic genius. However, for every good comedic instance within it, it also contains a good amount of dead spots that hinder the audiences’ enjoyment of the very amusing moments. This movie has some of the more “cricket spurring” comedic occurrences that you will ever witness within a film. Much of the comedy feels forced as many of the scenes drain the humor out of the joke. An example of this happens from the outset where the Annie is having sex with her “sex buddy,” Ted (Hamm). The situation shows some promise but it quickly loses its humorous value as it overdone.

In spite of those dead spots, there are moments that are utterly hilarious that thankfully increase the enjoyment of the film. Scenes such as the “gown fitting” and Annie‘s blow up at the engagement party are easily the two best scenes in the film. The gown fitting scene was without question the best of the two. The sheer unparalleled raunchy nature of the scene is offset by it being so hilarious.

The six female actresses that comprise the roles of the bridesmaids all do an admirable job in trying to increase the comedic value of the film. Kristen Wiig plays Annie, a character who is almost too hopeless to be funny. Wiig’s character of Annie’s destitute situation is similar to a modern day Nathan Fallen (The Jerk), with her sense of haplessness, although no where near as funny. Wiig displays a few shinning moments but comes up short as the focus of the film. The competition between she and Helen (Byrne) which was one of the key points of the film isn’t humorous enough to maintain the audience throughout. Mya Randolph doesn’t display the comedic ability as she has displayed in other films. Melissa McArthy shows some comedic promise as fat chick Megan, Kevin‘s sister. She is the only bridesmaid outside of the trio of stars that each get a extremely brief moment in the spotlight. Each of them have a brief moment or two but the lack of equal screen time made the cast feel mismatched.

If there ever has been a comedy that was over-hyped then this it. The hype that surrounded this film completely killed it for me. Bridesmaids isn’t nearly as funny as advertised. The movie uses a number of edgy, raunchy moments in an attempt to spark a response. It has some moments of comedic genius however it isn’t even close to being the uproarious outing that it has been made to be as too many of them fail to hit the mark. Much of the comedy within it is an acquired taste with little to no middle ground. Either you’ll like it or you don’t. It lacks the true universal comedic appeal to entertain everyone. It was difficult to view this film without prejudging it because of all of the hype that was given to this movie when it was in theaters. Bridesmaids is funny but not even close to measuring up to the all of the acclaim that it received. It could have been more enjoyable had it not had some of the labels attached to it.

Kristen Wiig in Jimmy Fallon's SNL Monologue (Christmas Song)

NBC had a change of heart/copyrights and posted the Jimmy Fallon SNL Monologue.

Quite a cheer when he came out!

Host Jimmy Fallon grabbed his guitar and made merry in the halls of SNL, offering songs to old friends along the way.

Holy crack in the smack!

Alright, if I didn't do it earlier, I'm going to do it now. I'm predicting that this episode will get Jimmy Fallon a nomination for best guest actor on a comedy series. Last season, Justin Timberlake (won), Zach Galifianakis, and Tina Fey were nominated for that (I was disappointed that Jim Carrey wasn't, because he was so funny).

This year I'm predicting that Jimmy Fallon will be nominated. I'm also predicting that Melissa McCarthy will be nominated this year (for Guest Actress). Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Betty White, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Timberlake all also have a shot if they host.

Anyway, Kristen has a small bit where she's studying the cue cards. At the end, she comes out to dance with the rest of the cast.

Andy was hilarious as he came out with Vanessa Bayer to have a Hanukkah verse with Jimmy!

Then watch carefully at 3:36 when Andy and Vanessa run by in the background behind Jimmy! They're getting ready for the end when all the cast comes out and dances!

The crowd went nuts! Jimmy really knows how to give the audience what they want.

Check out the dances of Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Taran Killam... those are hilarious! I'd also expect something killer from Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis but they weren't as into it.

Kristen Wiig: 'Bridesmaids casting was important'

Kristen Wiig has confessed that she felt under pressure to get the casting of Bridesmaids right.

The Saturday Night Live star, who wrote the 2011 comedy with Annie Mumolo, revealed that only Wendi McLendon-Covey, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy were offered their roles without having to audition, a process which Wiig found strange to oversee.

"To really sit on the other side of that was really eye-opening and weird. I definitely know how it feels to be the person walking in and doing an audition," Wiig recalled in a new interview with Paper Mag.

"in my experience, to like, say something awkward and then leave my bag in the room - it's a nerve-racking thing. Getting these relationships and chemistry down between the actors was really important, because that was the biggest part of the movie."

Wiig also expressed her frustration with the media's obsession with the mostly female cast, saying: "It's unfortunate that this is only now being talked about, because women have been present in comedy for so long. There have been tons of movies with lots of women in them before Bridesmaids.

"It's just a confusing thing to me. But you know, if more movies are getting green-lit, and writers are getting a chance because of this movie, I couldn't be happier. That's such a great thing, because the fact that they weren't is kind of awful."

Each year, the New York Times Arts & Leisure Weekend brings together moguls in film, television, theater, dance, music, journalism and more. This year, Alan Rickmann and Kristen Wiig are among those leading colloquiums which are set to begin Jan. 5, 2012 at the TimesCenter.

The event allows those interested in the arts to hear firsthand accounts of the creative process from those involved. Arts and Leisure Weekend events are scheduled until January 8th thus far.

Rickmann, who is known for his role as Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" film franchise and lead role in Broadway comedy Seminar, will appear from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Jan. 7, 2012. Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live alumni and star and writer of this year’s hit comedy “Bridesmaids,” will appear Jan. 8, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. with the film’s director Paul Feig.

Bridesmaids: Top 11 Reasons It Was Strangely Disappointing

As the awards season brings a renewed -- and mostly well-deserved -- attention to the film Bridesmaids, I feel it might be worth revisiting. To be clear, I found the movie to be genuinely entertaining and I'm happy it's getting awards consideration this season. That said, I saw it in its third or fourth week of general release last summer and I couldn't help but feel disappointed in a few ways -- some objective, some not so much. As a filmmaker myself, I'm generally loathe to critique another movie in public. (And if I didn't like the movie at all, I wouldn't have cared. But somehow, I do.) So in no particular order, then (and at the considerable personal risk of never getting hired by Judd Apatow) here are my Top 11 Reasons Bridesmaids was Strangely Disappointing:

1. It's not a female version of The Hangover. That's good, right? But one reason people thought it would be was prominently displayed in the trailer: a slow-motion shot of the titular bridesmaids (a phrase that itself could have come from The Hangover) as they round the corner of a jetway with a Vegas poster in the back. Guess what? They don't make it to Vegas. This is a tribute to the movie: It's not the female version of The Hangover. It's its own movie and should be proud of it. But the cast and crew have no one to blame but Universal's own marketing strategy for the comparison. It's a good lesson for all filmmakers: You live by the trailer, you die by the trailer.

Editor: By design. The filmmakers were likely never thinking of The Hangover. However, the marketing team saw it and realized that they go to Vegas (sort of) and that the airplane sequence is hilarious. So with a little bit of efforts, they made the trailer seem like they were flying to Vegas, and thus, would get compared as a "female Hangover." Bridesmaids made $280 million! Do you think the trailer had anything to do with that? Heck yeah, and they purposefully made it look like "Hangover for chicks", which helped sell the film beautifully. So, yeah, "By design" is the response here.

2. Foreigners. OK, you're in Milwaukee. Why are Kristen Wiig's two roommates British siblings? They're perfectly amusing characters, but why are they British? And then what would be the odds of her falling for the one Irish highway patrolman in Wisconsin? I'm guessing that Wisconsin has never had an Irish highway patrolman. These foreigners are barely explained away, which leads me only to believe that the filmmakers liked these actors from the comedy circuit or to get co-financing from Great Britain or some other reason that took me out of the movie. You couldn't find any American actors to play those parts? Really?

Editor: Good points, but those actors did make the characters more interesting. And yes, Kristen and company probably scouted out their comedic talents and were thinking about talent first (over than making sure foreigners weren't in Milwaukee).

3. Milwaukee. I was stoked to see that Bridesmaids was set in Milwaukee. A nice, non-obvious choice that was played realistically as a cosmopolitan mid-sized midwestern city. The film was neither patronizing nor pollyanish about Milwaukee with nary a beer brewing Laverne & Shirley reference to be found. In fact, one of the first cuts on the excellent soundtrack was a cool cover of the Milwaukee-based band, The Violent Femmes. Nice touch! The movie was also refreshingly not set in a tax-credit grubbing state like Michigan. The only problem was, as the credits would indicate, the film was shot in California. Or at least that was the only film commission thanked by name in the credits. You would think the Wisconsin Film Commission deserves a thank you just by virtue of the B-roll helicopter shots of Milwaukee, but no.

Editor: So you're complaining that they adequately fooled you? So?

4. Jill Clayburgh's last movie. This was strangely personal as I'd recently met with Jill Clayburgh's real daughter, Tony-nominated actress Lily Rabe, right before seeing Bridesmaids. So it was oddly disconcerting to see Kristen Wiig playing Clayburgh's fake daughter in the movie. Especially because Wiig is at least 15 years older than Lily. In any case, it's traditional to give some sort of acknowledgement in your end credits to a famous actor who dies during post production. But unless I missed it, I saw no such "in memory of" credit to Clayburgh in the credits. Furthermore, I haven't seen a single "for your consideration" ad this awards season from Universal or any PR-generated articles suggesting she should get a posthumous supporting actress award. Maybe they're there, but I haven't seen them.

Editor: Agree on both points (she should have been credited and should be considered for a GG or AA nomination).

5. Minor characters sounded like Kristen Wiig. I felt like several of the minor characters in the movie (i.e., a woman on the plane, the teenager at the jewelry store) sounded like they were doing Kristen Wiig impersonations from her SNL characters. Wiig herself sometimes did, too, but that's to be expected, I suppose. My wife thinks this could be explained by the fact that Wiig was a co-writer of the script, but it still took me out of the movie.

Editor: I agree big time! I was watching the whole movie, and I couldn't help but feel like it was a world full of Kristen Wiig! Everybody was Kristen Wiig! I spoke it out loud to those around me during both those scenes you mentioned (jewelry store and airplane), but even Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Jon Hamm, and Rose Byrn were speaking and acting like Kristen Wiig!!! And yes, that took me out of the movie. However, that's part of what gave the movie it's charm and success. So it's bittersweet for me. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but I'm willing to admit that it's for the good of the film.

6. Editing. Like almost every other Apatow-produced movie (of which I'm generally a fan; and yes, I'd love to direct one of his movies) Bridesmaids started slow and could have been cut by at least 20 minutes. I was surprised to find two editors on the credits. *, they can't even edit the number of editors on these films!

Editor: Disagree. I found the earlier parts between Wiig and Hamm and Wiig and Rudolph to be funny and to help stabilize the characters (so when you saw Wiig and Rudolph go crazy, you can take it into context with their overall personalities). The danger with rushing a film is that you sometimes don't get to meet the characters in their normal worlds, and Bridesmaids executed on that better than many films.

7. Cinematography. One fellow director told me ahead of time that the cinematography was impressive. Really?? I found it to be flatly lit, and had not a single memorable or inspiring shot in the movie. Comedies don't have to be badly shot. Even some films from Apatow-alumni directors like Greg Mottola (Superbad, Paul) and David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Your Highness) have ambitious cinematography. But those guys also both cut their chops on award-winning festival films before heading to TV and then back again to features.

Editor: Agree, but I didn't find it to be a big deal.

8. Bodily fluids. If you're going to go there, then don't pull your punches. Vomiting on one another was inspired, but with not one but two characters defecating in inappropriate places, why not show a little brown? Especially after hearing incessant reviews that there would be bodily fluids to compete with "male" comedies, I felt let down.

Editor: Disagree. I was super glad that they didn't show it. It helped remind me that women were involved, and they have better taste (well, only slightly better).

9. Annie Walker. Kristen Wiig's character has the same name as Piper Perabo's on the USA series Covert Affairs. Now, Bridesmaids was undoubtedly shot (and most certainly written) before Covert Affairs premiered in the summer of 2010 on basic cable. But all it takes is one writer's assistant or clearance paralegal to do an IMDB check at some point along the way and have the filmmakers just edit out Wiig's character's last name during her engagement shower speech (a scene that could have used the cutting anyway).

Editor: Back it the real world, we just don't care. It's a good name.

10. Jon Hamm. Why have so many (from reviewers to the filmmakers themselves) found it so odd that such a good-looking guy like Jon Hamm would fall for Kristen Wiig? Wiig is very pretty. (And contrary to the script, she's just as skinny as Rose Byrne, if not more so). Why wouldn't she land a fellow like Hamm? I mean, is she any worse looking than Hamm's real life mate Jennifer Westfelt? I dare say, not.

Editor: I must have missed that buzz. Hamm is definitely handsome, and seeing a handsome man in a loathesome role was incredibly funny and refreshing. So I think we both agree that Hamm was good in this role. You're more disappointed with people who we should just ignore. =^)

11. My bitter jealousy of Paul Feig. Ever since I was part of the Slamdance Film Festival programming committee that rejected his first movie (Life Sold Separately) back in the 90s, Feig's career has soared. From Freaks and Geeks to Undeclared, to directing landmark episodes of The Office and Weeds, to a burgeoning feature career under the wing of Judd Apatow, Feig is that rare comedy director who coasts easily between features and quality television. To get the opportunity to work with such talented writer/actors as Kristen Wiig and the rest of the Bridesmaids cast is a gift to him from the comedy gods. He acquitted himself exceptionally well, and deserves to be considered as a Best Director by any and all standards. Finally, by all accounts, he seems like a very nice guy, too. That *!

Editor: So this one is about your jealousy? Hmm. Well, Feig had his lumps in his career (like you said, you rejected him), and he's only now starting to get some credit as a film director, so he hasn't even peaked yet. If you want to have the success he's had, you might want to emulate his formula. Go to TV and try to create a show with a few experienced producers. See what happens.

Maya Rudolph talks about Kristen Wiig

Maya Rudolph has suggested that her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig was born to perform on Saturday Night Live.

Rudolph commented to Paper that Wiig made an immediate impression when she joined SNL in 2005 because she was supremely confident in her talent.

"Kristen came to SNL knowing who she was, which I really envy," said Rudolph, who co-starred with Wiig on the sketch comedy series for several years.

Rudolph continued: "I was 27 when I got there, and not really fully formed, but [Wiig] was an adult, and she immediately just sort of nailed it."

When Wiig herself was asked by the magazine to describe her SNL castmates, the comic joked: "I love the cast. We're like Melrose Place without the murder."

Wiig was recently rumored to be leaving Saturday Night Live at the end of the current season, but her rep has clarified that no decision will be made until next year.

Saturday Night Live continued with host Jimmy Fallon and musical guest Michael Buble at 11.30/10.30c on NBC.

Kristen Wiig had a great 2011, but will 2012 be even better?

There's no denying that 2011 was a huge year for "Saturday Night Live" star Kristen Wiig.

"Bridesmaids," the R-rated comedy she co-wrote and starred in, was one of the biggest movies of the year. In fact, it was just nominated for a Golden Globe for best comedy, and Wiig also received a nod for her performance in the film.

Wiig continues to be one of the most reliably funny cast members on "SNL," playing what seems like the most recurring characters of any current "SNL" comedian.

But now that she's begun the transition from funny side character and "SNL" crackup to leading lady, we think 2012 is the year Wiig could really shine. Even if "Bridesmaids" doesn't win any Globes, it's still a pretty great way to start the year. There's also the People's Choice Awards and the Critics Choice Awards, which have also given "Bridesmaids" accolades.

The thing we think could help Wiig become an A-list star once and for all, though, starts with the upcoming film "Friends With Kids," in which she costars alongside her buddy Jon Hamm. Seeing Wiig in a slightly more dramatic role could help solidify her as an actress in her own right, and combined with her "Bridesmaids" and "SNL" success, could lead to some really spectacular roles and writing opportunities.

Well, I'm not sure if 50/50 and "My Week with Marilyn" should be comedies. They're more like dramas with comedic elements. "Marilyn" will win hands down. Shouldn't even be in the same category as Bridesmaids, unfortunately. However, it's fantastic that we see Bridesmaids here at all, when other films like Hangover 2 don't get nominated.

And then Kristen Wiig is being nominated for Bridesmaids as...

Could Judd Apatow and Kristen Wiig’s ‘Bridesmaids’ Nab an Oscar?

Awards forecasters say the raunchy comedy just might receive some unexpected Academy Awards love. Chris Lee talked to the movie’s producer Judd Apatow to find out how Bridesmaids reached the screen.

Bringing joy to both ends of the cultural spectrum—that is, to frat boys and feminists alike—the R-rated comedy Bridesmaids has arguably become 2011’s most universally beloved film. Thanks to its transgressive take on female-friendly raunch and jolts of explosive toilet humor, the $32.5 million movie clocked more than $288 million at the box office worldwide to become a monster summer hit. And now Bridesmaids is finding its way onto critics’ and film boards’ best-of year-end movie lists alongside more sobering dramatic fare such as War Horse, The Tree of Life, and Moneyball.

But can Bridesmaids pull the upset of all upsets? With buzz around Hollywood growing progressively louder for the film as the awards season makes its inexorable slog toward the Kodak Theater, could Bridesmaids land an Oscar nomination?

According to a growing number of movie pundits and Gurus of Gold, the movie is a likely contender for several Golden Globes, whose nominations are announced Dec. 15. It stands a solid chance of seeing some Oscar love too, particularly Bridesmaids’ writer-star Kristen Wiig and co-writer Annie Mumolo in the Best Original Screenplay category, which seems to be a wide open field this year. (The nominations come in January.)

Never mind that Academy voters historically have been reluctant to honor movies that provoke belly laughs instead of jerking tears. The two acknowledged frontrunners for Best Original Screenplay, the black-and-white silent feature The Artist and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, stand out, a refreshing change of pace, as funny films with dramatic moments, rather than vice versa.

“People seem to think it’s more difficult to make movies without jokes in them,” noted Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow. “But that’s just not true.”

To underscore how unlikely Bridesmaids’ rise to become part of this cultural conversation is, you have to trace the movie’s roots back to 2006. That year, Saturday Night Live regular Wiig was cast in a bit part as a paggro cable television executive in the movie Apatow was directing at the time, Knocked Up. Applying what he describes as his “usual M.O.,” the comedy kingpin, responsible for many of the most successful funny films of the past decade, asked Wiig if she had any movie ideas.

“This was before people know who Kristen was from SNL,” Apatow recalled. “She would just get giant laughs right off the bat. So I just said to her, ‘Let me know if you have any ideas for a screenplay for yourself.’ That’s what happened on Anchorman when I worked with Steve Carell. He had the idea for The 40 Year Old Virgin.”

“At some point after that shoot, Kristen said she and her partner, Annie, had this idea, which was Bridesmaids,” he continued. “But there was no script. Just an idea.”

That idea was originally titled Maid of Honor, until the production discovered a movie of the same name already existed. But the basic premise for Bridesmaids was there from the beginning. The film would follow a “wounded woman” (Wiig), someone with crushingly low self-esteem who starts spinning out of control just as her best friend puts her life in order by getting married. Adding insult to injury, each of the other bridesmaids are better off than she is for one reason or another, raising the stakes of the character’s explicit need for personal redemption.

Over the following years, writing commenced, with Wiig in New York for her day job and Mumolo grinding out the script in Los Angeles. The two would meet on weekends and conduct semi-regular “table reads” of drafts for Apatow to get his notes and suggestions. Every joke was tweaked and reworked multiple times to achieve maximum comic liftoff. “It was a long time and a lot of work,” said a source who has worked with Apatow on several projects, including Bridesmaids, but who requested anonymity. “You might write a million versions of every scene. There’s always a chance to elevate the material, to make everything even better.”

The producer’s longtime creative partner, Paul Feig—who created Freaks and Geeks, the Fox TV series that delivered Apatow initial renown as a comedic tastemaker—was brought on to direct Bridesmaids. The cast, meanwhile, was rounded out by a hodgepodge of TV and movie actresses, including Wiig’s former Saturday Night Live castmate Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne (TV’s Damages, X-Men: First Class), and the movie’s breakout star, Melissa McCarthy, from the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly.

About two thirds of the way through production, the producer made a suggestion that was greeted with considerable reluctance. He proposed to Mumolo and Wiig what remains Bridesmaids’ central talking point: a gut-busting sequence in which the maids of honor are brought low by food poisoning courtesy of Wiig’s character’s restaurant choice. From there, they are shown suffering through bouts of explosive diarrhea as well as vomiting in, on, and around a fancy-pants wedding dress shop.

“The reaction was, ‘Are you * kidding? This is not what happens to women. That’s not what kind of movie this is,’” remembered the source close to the production. “There was definite reluctance about it. But they took a leap of faith because of Judd and Paul. ‘These are funny guys and they know what they’re talking about.’ It wasn’t [Wiig and Mumolo’s] instinct to put that in the movie, though.”

Apatow, however, brushes off the notion that he strong-armed the writers into including the explosive pooping and insists none of it would have been included had the footage not been up to par. “It was important that there were some moments that would bring down the house,” he said. “We knew this would be a big swing, an all-or-nothing proposition.”

“But there’s always a moment beforehand when we say, ‘Are we really going to do this?’” he continued. “There’s a set now and special-effects people who are trying to determine whether the sink is too high for Melissa to jump on. So there was a breath where we all said, ‘Let’s give it a shot. If it works, it works. And if it doesn’t, we’ll cut it out.’”

In addition to scoring with both audiences and critics, Bridesmaids’ short-term impact has been to get other woman-fronted comedies the green light from Hollywood’s studio system by putting to rest Christopher Hitchens’s “Why women aren’t funny” debate. “It’s ridiculous. Women are more than 50 percent of the population and they are forced to see movies made primarily by men, starring men, and about men,” Apatow said. “But that’s not why we made it. It was only after the movie was completed that anyone said this had any significance. We didn’t think it was any different than something like The House Bunny or Baby Mama. So we didn’t think we were breaking any new ground. We just thought it was a fun thing to do.”

Kristen Wiig may have a new beau — but what happened to her old one?

The “Saturday Night Live” funnygirl has been linked with the Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, but until recently, Wiig was in a long-term relationship with her live-in boyfriend, actor-filmmaker Brian Petsos. The 37-year-old had often waxed poetically about “The Funny or Die” producer (Petsos), whom she first met when she was 15.

Just this past June, in an interview promoting her flick “Bridesmaids” with the British publication Stylist, she told the mag she had “been in a relationship for years now and we consider ourselves married.”

Wiig, who had previously been hitched to actor Hayes Hargrove , added that she didn’t “see the need for an actual wedding.” But according to a source, things became “troubled” between the shacked-up pair over the summer. Both parties kept things quiet as the relationship began to unravel, due to Wiig’s tendency to be a “private and shy” person.

The insider, who is close to Wiig’s launch pad to success, “SNL,” adds that her rise to fame was part of the wedge between the long-time couple.

“She became really famous, really fast,” says the source, pointing out that Wiig had struggled as a comedian for a long time with Petsos before hitting it big. “And everyone knew it, especially Brian.” While the insider called Petsos a “seemingly supportive” person, the differences in the status of their entertainment careers began to “wear on them.”

But things haven’t gone completely sour between Wiig and her former flame. “They still talk,” says the source. “I’m sure [the thing with\] Fabrizio is going to surprise a lot of people around her.”

Wiig and Moretti, who were first spotted together at a celebration at the W Hotel for the Black Keys’ new album on Monday, looked awfully cozy on Wednesday evening at a party at the Absolut House on the LES, hosted by Chris Taylor of the band Grizzly Bear. A source at the bash says Wiig arrived solo, telling a few of the guests that she was “meeting a friend there.” Eventually the musician, who dated Drew Barrymore for five years until 2007, arrived at the party, making a beeline for the lithe blond. Our insider says Wiig and Moretti “were openly all over each other.”

When a photographer went to snap their picture together, “she freaked out.” The source says Wiig looked both ways, as if trying to find an escape route, and in a chivalrous move the 31-year-old drummer “covered her with a coat” to block her face from the flashes. “They definitely did not want to be photographed together,” says the party-goer, adding the loved-up duo left together before 11 p.m.

The Saturday Night Live comic and Bridesmaids star, 38, was spotted with the Strokes drummer, 31, at Monday's bash for the Black Keys' new album at the W Hotel in NYC.

"Kristen and Fabrizio were making out in a booth," an observer tells Us Weekly. "They were all over each other! They were definitely not discreet."

(The New York Post's Page Six also reported the siting at the W, noting the pair "were literally on op of each other."

She and Moretti (who dated Drew Barrymore for five years before splitting in 2007) were seen together again two nights later at a Wednesday party at Absolut House on Manhattan's Lower East Side, according to another witness. Wiig was briefly married to actor Hayes Hargrove; as of May 2010, she was living with actor/filmmaker Brian Petsos.

Her first starring skit was as Greta Van Susteren's On the Record (the SNL Cold Opening). This is her fourth time doing this impression. (Amy Poehler also did Greta once in 2002.)

Kristen's other two starring skits were new characters... Kalle Jakra (talk show host) and Rebecca Larue (on Weekend Update), a professional flirter.

I think Rebecca has the makings of a hit and repeat character for Kristen Wiig, so we're opening this week with Rebecca...

Kristen Wiig on SNL tonight

I'm on the east coast tonight, so I get SNL a few hours earlier.

Kristen had a good week with Greta and a few others. But the standout was her new performance as a flirter on Weekend Update. Fantastic job, Kristen!

This week had guest appearances from Darrell Hammond, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, and Val Kilmer. That was pretty sweet. Alec had the best appearance, where he cleverly covered up hos own mishap that got him in the news (Alec pretended to be a piolot who apologizes to Alec for how he was treated). It's a clever way to subdue bad press for Alec.

And as you can see, the gag of including John Goodman on the staff would be a hilarious inside joke (and good for a lot of media press), as would including the Don Pardo 9000. Of course, they could go all the way and get actors to play cast members Drew Adams, Michael Butler, Arianna Cleo, and Kevin Wallarski... but just including John Goodman and the Don Pardo 9000 would probably be enough to sell the joke.

John Goodman was truly the ghost of SNL hosts present because that season (24, 98-99) he cameo'd as Linda Tripp on Sep 26 (Cameron Diaz hosted), Nathan Barnett on Nov 14 (Joan Allen hosted), Tripp on Nov 21 (Jennifer Love Hewitt hosted), and Tripp on May 8 (Cuba Gooding Jr. hosted). He had 6 cameos total that season, and Goodman hosted on April 10 (99) that same season (so 7 appearances that season). And he hosted consequetively in seasons 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (this 98 season), 25, and 26 (hosting 12 times, total). So that sets the context as to why he was the ghost of SNL hosts present.

John Goodman had 21 total appearances from 89-03, which is more than any other guest during that time period. However, Steve Martin had 24 total appearances (15 hosting), and Alec Baldwin has had 22 total appearances (16 hosting). So John Goodman is third both in total appearances (21) and hosting (12).

So... Jimmy Fallon announced that he's going to host the December 17 episode of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Michael Buble. It marks Fallon's first time hosting since he left the show in 2004, but fans shouldn't be too surprised to see him back in Studio 8H — not only has he done cameos on the show here and there, but back in 1998, SNL itself announced he'd host right around then. As you can see in the video, Alec Baldwin's monologue from a season 24 episode predicts exactly this: That Jimmy Fallon, as the host of Christmas future in this Christmas Carol riff, will host on December 12, 2011. Most people remember this episode for its Schwetty Balls, but perhaps its prescience will become its new calling card!

That's right! Jimmy Fallon was only 5 days off! (What's the matter, they didn't do their calendar math correctly and pick a date that lands on a Saturday, or did they think it was going to move to Monday and be called MNL instead?)

They obviously weren't thinking (or caring) about getting the date right. They just picked the same date as that episode that Baldwin was hosting (which was on December 12th, 1998).

I actually remember watching this episode back in 98. At this point in time, Jimmy was in his first year on the show (only his third month), he was a featured cast member, and a total noob to the show. So at the time I was skeptical if he would be popular in 2011. But he pulled it off!

However, I was excited about him at that point in time, because of his song during the October 4th episode...

These are the SNL bits he previously had done (at that point in time):

1. September 26, 1998 (Cameron Diaz hosted)
- He played Gilbert Gottfried in a Hollywood Squares bit; I wonder if Fallon's Gottfried is as good as Taran Killam's sweet portrayal

- Bit roles in a commercial and a Mr. Peepers sketch

3. October 17, 1998 (Lucy Lawless hosted)
- 5 bit roles, including a Steven Tyler impression in a group sketch.

4. October 24th, 1998 (Ben Stiller hosted)
- Adam Sandler on Celebrity Jeopardy (this was memorable and a key bit that got Jimmy on SNL)
- A Jimmy Fallon song on Weekend Update (this was when I really noticed Jimmy and thought he was going further than he ended up going)

5. November 7, 1998 (David Spade hosted)
- Solid Howard Stern and Leonardo DiCaprio impressions in group skits. Actually the Leo impression was a voice during the legendary Kiwi meets Mango sketch (classic).

6. November 14, 1998 (Joan Allen hosted)
- 2 bit roles and solid Marilyn Manson and French Steweart impressions in group sketches.
- He really sold his Jerry Seinfeld impression in Tarmac Talk. So this was noticeable and impressive.

7. November 21, 1998 (Jennifer Love Hewitt hosted)
- 2 bit roles and a Michael Stripe impression in a Celine Dion sketch.

8. December 5, 1998 (Vince Vaughn hosted)
- A hilarious (but brief) Richard Simmons impression in the cold open.
- Lead in "Married Guys" with Will and Vince
- Ghost of John Lennon
- 2 more bit roles.

And then that brings us to the Baldwin episode on 12/12/98.

So while Fallon was proving himself by filling in his impressions (more often than Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam are today, but probably not as well as they are, because the only impressions Fallon had gotten as the center of a bit were his Seinfeld and Lennon), it was relly just his guitar song he did on October 24th where you started to wonder if he was the next Adam Sandler (and he's not, if you're wondering).

So taking all that into consideration, to have Jimmy stand up and say he'd be a hit in 13 years, it was a little gutsy on everybody's part (including the producers). It was funny enough to do anyway, but I remember thinking, "We'll see. If you keep doing songs like that one you did and maybe pull out some hit characters like the awesome ones that were hits at the time... Spartans, Dog Show, Goth Talk, Mr. Peepers, Clinton, Celebrity Jeopardy, The View, Ladies Man, Roxbury Guys, Delicious Dish, Antonio Banderas Ah Yes Show, Judge Judy, Culps, Mango, Martha Stewart Living, Harry Caray, Celine Dion, Mary Katherine Gallagher, and Pimp Chat." My personal opinion is that the only bits he had that were worthy of those hits that his teammates had above were Jeffrey's that he did with Ferrell and Sanz and his guitar bits on Weekend Update. Other than those, I don't think he had anything worthy. And I think his movie career echoed that well.

(But to be fair, Shannon, Gasteyer, Oteri, Kattan, and Meadows also never had hit film careers, even though they were amazing on SNL; it takes a unique person like Ferrell or Wiig to transition from SNL to a hit film career... or Meyers, Murphy, Chase, Murray, Sandler, etc.)

That said, I think Fallon could have found a niche to be popular by being on a sitcom (maybe) or by hosting a Today Show, which is what he did when he accidentally took over Conan's spot (it was done with Conan's blessing at the time). And the only reason why Fallon is hosting SNL now is because he has a hit show (Late Night). Just in time to host when he predicted (which is obviously the reason why they picked that date for him and announced it so early).

So we know that Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Wiig are close (they were in Whip It together, and Kristen Wiig has been on Late Night several times). So it's going to be exciting to see what the two of them cook up on SNL!

The “Saturday Night Live” star appears in GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue, showing off her body in nothing but black lingerie and a tuxedo jacket.

Named “Bro of the Year” in the magazine, Wiig receives praise from her “Bridesmaids” co-star Jon Hamm.

Before teaming up on the big screen to play Wiig’s arrogant, egotistical lover, Hamm first noticed the actress while watching an “SNL” skit titled “Lady Business.”

"Kristen's line was, ‘I'm a bitch in the boardroom, a bore in the bedroom, and I'm a bear on the toilet,' which she delivered with over-the-top seriousness," Hamm, 40, said. "I thought, 'My God, this girl is funny.' "

Hamm admits that while Wiig is "incredibly shy," he admires her talents to dramatically transform into different characters on-screen.

"This is a woman who wore coconuts on her t--s on 'SNL,'” he said. “She can go to the craziest, most grotesque places on plant in character."

Her knack for taking on the raunchiest of roles isn't the only thing Hamm admires.

The actor also discussed their over-the-top sex scene in "Bridesmaids," and how Wiig's keen sense of control made for a comfortable situation.

Kristen Wiig's gone from working as a waitress to filming with Robert De Niro and Sean Penn. Emma Brockes hears how the summer's hit film Bridesmaids helped put the actor on the map.

Kristen Wiig: 'Bridesmaids was definitely the biggest role I’ve ever had.'

Kristen Wiig has had the kind of summer one might imagine to be life-changing. For four years, she and Annie Mumolo, her friend and co-writer, slaved over a comedy script commissioned by Judd Apatow about a woman whose best friend is getting married. It was the 38-year-old's first lead in a film, and her first full-length script to be produced. As an indication of how it played with audiences, I watched it on a plane last month with a friend who, during the scene in which the bride squats in the street to relieve herself after a bad kebab, laughed so long and hard a woman passing in the aisle leant over and said, "What are you watching?"

Wiig smiles when I tell her this. "Proud," she says, of the day they filmed the shi**ing-in-the-street scene. "A proud moment."

We are in the tearoom of a fashionable hotel in Tribeca, the Manhattan neighbourhood where Wiig lives. Before Bridesmaids, she was known to US audiences as a long-running cast member of Saturday Night Live and elsewhere for scene-stealing cameos in films such as Ghost Town and Knocked Up.

That the film, by midsummer, had grossed more than $150m in the US and outstripped not only all of Apatow's other films, but every "R-rated female comedy" in history, puts Wiig in the zone of woman of the moment, although she chafes against this, with its implication that before Bridesmaids she was an ingenue.

"In most ways my life hasn't changed," she says. "I know that's a boring answer. People want to hear that I bought all gold, fur…" She allows a perfectly timed beat. "I would never wear fur."

But hasn't she had to turn down lots of offers?

"I mean. Yes, no. It feels weird to say that; you don't want to be like, 'Everyone wants me!' I mean. I guess Bridesmaids was definitely the biggest role I've ever had. And the fact that I co-wrote it and everything. But, um…" Wiig, who is slight, with very straight hair and an eager tilt to her body language, looks mortified. "It's not like I have boxes of scripts arriving at my door."

Her understatement is fuelled perhaps by the inevitable and awkward comparisons she has gained with other women in her business, as if the culture can sustain only a couple at a time. Wiig has been getting "the new Tina Fey" quite a lot – Fey was head writer at SNL when Wiig joined – although the comparison is faulty. Wiig is an actor first and a comedian second, and with a film directed by Sean Penn in the pipeline and another, Imogene, in which she stars alongside Annette Bening and Matt Dillon, wants to develop her career away from comedy. "People always call me a comedian. And I don't really see myself like that. I guess I just consider myself an actor who does comedy. But who wants to do other things as well."

It took her a long time to get here. After growing up in upstate New York, she went to university in Arizona and studied art before dropping out after the first year and going to LA to try to make it as an actor. Arizona is a notorious party college, but Wiig says all of that was out of her system by the time she left high school, where she had a few shaky years. "I was not that good a student because I was very… social. I cared more about going out with my friends. I didn't quite realise the importance of school. But then when I went to college I took it much more seriously, because I enjoyed it."

How social was she? Suspended?

"Um. Not for more than a couple of days. There were suspensions." Her expression fixes. "That's the past." Before the spotlight was so firmly on her, Wiig talked publicly about her minor-league acts of teenage hooliganism, including being caught underage drinking at a Grateful Dead gig, skipping school and, what she called the worst of it, smashing pot plants on a neighbour's porch, which she feels terrible about. As she entered her 20s her parents were still worried, she says, and then when she kicked in her degree and told them she wanted to be an actor, "probably the most worried they could be".

For financial reasons?

"Yes. Also, they didn't want me to get disappointed. They would always mention the numbers – do you know how many people are trying to do what you're doing? Your chances are really slim. And they're right. Technically. But when you're 20, you're like, why can't you just support me?! Can't you be proud that I'm trying to go after my dream?" She pulls a whiny face and tilts her head. "But they came around quickly when they saw how happy it made me. They would come and see me in the horrible little shows that I was in."

Wiig hadn't any great sense of being funny when she was growing up. Her dad, she says, tells a lot of jokes. Her mother is funny, but "mom funny, where she isn't trying to be funny, but is". Before retiring, her father ran a marina on one of the lakes upstate in New York (the name Wiig is from his Norwegian heritage). Her mother was an artist. Even after all these years, they haven't quite shed the sense of precariousness around their daughter's life; when she tells them she's in a movie, her mother will say tentatively, "Is that something we can see in theatres?" Wiig smiles and says, "They're still getting used to the idea that I'm working and it's OK."

With good reason. Wiig was 11 years in LA before she got the call from Saturday Night Live, during which time her income was erratic. She had arrived in the city with no professional contacts and a nagging sense of insurmountable competition. "I was incredibly intimidated and had no experience. I felt very scared and unsure and I didn't have any résumé, and everyone around me was very beautiful and young and I thought, oh, maybe I should work in a store and enjoy the weather. But I started taking improv classes and that's what got me started."

Improv was something she had never heard of before. But when she turned up to watch a gig one day at the Groundlings, the famous LA improv troupe with alumni such as Lisa Kudrow, Conan O'Brien and Will Ferrell, something resonated. The idea of standing on stage and making up stuff was, she says, less scary to her than the notion of saying lines, with the lurking fear there was a right and a wrong way to say them. With improvisation, there was no right and wrong: "You can't mess it up and you can't forget your lines."

Her enthusiasm wouldn't pay the bills, however, and Wiig worked at a series of day jobs, including at a floral design studio for a couple of years, and as a waitress in the refectory at Universal Studios. Now and then she'll run into someone on a TV show or a movie, and wonder where she knows them from. "And then I'll remember: oh yeah, I used to serve you Cobb salad."

There were many long, dark nights of the soul. "Oh my *, every month, yeah, because you don't have a lot of money coming in. When I look back, it was one of the best times of my life, because you're so in it with your friends. But you do have those moments when you're like: have I given it a try, should I stop, should I quit? But, no. You have a family there, you have a space to put shows on. I would rather be doing what I love and living above a garage – which I did – than not."

The call came in 2005. Wiig flew to New York for the first of several auditions with the Saturday Night Live creators. The audition format was standup, which she had never done before, and in front of a terrifying panel including Lorne Michaels, the legendary SNL producer, and Tina Fey. Wiig was required to unveil a range of characters of her own creation that might be suitable for the sketch show and, quivering up there alone on stage, she fully expected to be met with silence. When she heard a few laughs, she gathered strength, got through it and was called back for a second audition. After which, nothing. And then the new season started. "So I thought, right, pretty clear – thanks for coming. And then after the third show I got a call saying I was hired, come in…"

Wiig joined the show at a time when it was undergoing a cultural transition. Fey was the first female head writer and has written about the formally macho culture of the show – men pissing in jars by their desks, etc, which she put to comic use in 30 Rock. It was tough, she says, walking into a workplace where everyone knew each other: "Kind of like going into someone's living room for a party and they are really comfortable and have their shoes off and are sitting on the couch and I walk in and am a little dressed up and don't know where to stand? They were all very welcoming and nice but I knew I wasn't at that place yet where I could take my shoes off."

She was excited to be working with the likes of Fey, Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch, although Wiig is reluctant to describe the still testosterone-heavy environment at SNL as off-putting. "I mean, I mean, merely by numbers there are more men that work there, but I don't consider it… I don't even think about it. Men work there, women work there, we have a lot of amazing female writers on staff right now… There are more men, but I don't think anyone really…"

Was she a fan of Fey's before she joined the show?

"Um. I've watched the show since I was born. I mean I definitely admire all the stuff that she's accomplished, especially coming from SNL and being head writer, and then doing 30 Rock and all these movies and her book, I mean it's definitely something where you go, oh, that can happen. Someone can do that. She's done it. She deserves it."

To date, Bridesmaids has earned in the region of $286m worldwide; it doesn't need the qualifier "best female comedy" since it outgrossed Apatow's entire back catalogue, including Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Still, Wiig does not claim feminist dividends for the film – that it allowed women actors to be as gross on screen as men. She says when she and Mumolo were writing the **ing-in-the-street scene ("Can that be the title of the piece?"), it wasn't with an eye on levelling the playing field, nor was there much discussion of whether the market would tolerate that kind of vulgarity from women. No. "I think when you are doing anything creative and you think, 'What are the critics going to think?' instead of what you want to express, it can get a little muddy, and – I'm talking so seriously about this **ing-in-the-street – but with that in particular we were like, oh, this is a fun way to end the scene, and Annie used to do an impression of someone slowly realising they were **ing their pants, kind of slowly going down on to the ground. She would just do it as a joke, and it would always make me laugh really hard. She took it to a whole new level."

Apatow had approached Wiig and asked her to write a script for him after they worked together on Knocked Up, in which she played a small pivotal role as Katherine Heigl's bitchy boss. In her five minutes on screen, Wiig managed to communicate brilliantly the gap between what her character was saying and thinking. She and Mumolo first conceived of Bridesmaids not as a wedding movie per se, but as a movie about friendship. "I mean, it's called Bridesmaids, I get that. But it's about women who, when they reach that age, whether it's in their 30s or not, thought they were supposed to be somewhere else. That's where we started from. And the fact that Annie had been to seven weddings in two years. And that she had friends who were marrying money and she'd showed up at the country club for the bridal shower with her wing mirrors duct-taped to her car, and at the end of the night had to crawl through her window because the front door would always swell when it was hot out. But if it's your best friend, you don't want to be complaining…"

On paper at least, it didn't look too promising, with the generic title and the number of lame wedding movies in a seemingly exhausted genre. Apatow's name raised suspicions, too, about the use to which certain characters would be put, especially that of Megan, played by Melissa McCarthy, who looked like the inevitable one-fat-girl-in-the-group and the obvious butt of fat-girl jokes. In fact, McCarthy is the other break-out star of the film, and "the character that didn't care what anybody else thought. It was a lesson my character needed to learn. She doesn't care what anyone thinks, she's in her own world, but is generous and sweet. We wanted to have that opposite look on life, the character who seems at first like there was nothing she could say that would help, but…"

The writing of the dialogue was relatively easy, says Wiig, compared with figuring out what should happen in each scene, and the film went through countless draft versions, crammed in around other work commitments, so that Mumolo, for example, would fly out to Mexico where Wiig was filming, to work on it for a weekend. In early drafts, the women ended up in Vegas, but that got chucked out when, over the four years of writing, it was used up in other wedding films such as The Hangover.

Apart from the fact that it is very funny, Bridesmaids ultimately works because it has a kind of sweet sincerity and the friendship between the two lead characters seems real. It bemuses Wiig that the film has widely been described as "raunchy". It's really not raunchy. "Raunchy means like Porky's," she says and smiles. "Which is my next movie; it's going to be a Porky's prequel."

After six years in New York, Wiig is finally at home in the city. It was tough in the early days, she says, and when friends came to visit she would burst into tears as they left. ("I was so embarrassed. I thought, oh my *, they're going to go back and say, 'Kristen's not good. She is noooot coping well.'") If accounts are to be believed, she was briefly married to an actor called Hayes Hargrove and currently lives with her partner, a film-maker called Brian Petsos, but she responds to even the mildest question about her domestic life with a frozen smile. She would, of course, rather talk about acting, and her success in her first lead role – "I felt like I had to do a good job or no one would ever invite me to the party again" – has, despite her scrupulous modesty, been rewarded with the kind of films she always hoped she'd walk into. In the Sean Penn film The Comedian, which is still in the early stages of production, Wiig will co-star with Robert De Niro. It will be the real test of whether she is leading lady material, and whether she can carry a film without jokes. "I don't really think about it," says Wiig. "When you're in it, you're in it."

In the meantime, she has sketches to write and shoot as part of the gruelling schedule of Saturday Night Live. After the interview, she is due in at the office for the weekly writing night, when everyone is required to be in at 4pm and stay until the following morning. Wiig is riding so high at the moment that when, as we leave, I ask her to confirm her age, I'm surprised when she grimaces. Yes, she says, she's 38. Why the face? Under her breath, like a dangerous heresy, she says, "I feel like women are asked their age more than men." And she snaps on a smile and leaves the restaurant.

Steve Buscemi has also hosted on 04.04.1998 (he played the Mad Hatter, was in Bill Clinton, Morning Latte, Goth Talk, and Judge Judy skits). He cameo'd on 10.15.1994 when John Travolta hosted (Steve was in "Quentin Tarantino's Welcome Back, Kotter") and he did a filmed cameo on 04.15.2000 when Tobey Maguire hosted.

Katy Perry should be interesting. Katy was a musical guest on 09.25.2010 (Amy Poehler hosted). She got her acting chops going by playing a young woman who was well endowed on Bronx Beat (Maya Rudolph cameo'd) and she cameo'd in Boogerman (a horrible use of Katy Perry in a digital short).

Kristen and Jimmy are hilarious together on the Late Night Show (and they costarred in Whip It). I can't wait to see what they've cooked up together!

So this skit barely covers Cain's sexual allegations (women who he supposedly unsuccessfully hit on for affairs have come forward). But then it focuses on Perry's mistake (forgetting the third government department he would close) and then beautifully turned it into a Mice & Men reference.

Interestingly they showed Romney to be the intelligent and clever one in this skit.

This is Kristen's sixth appearance as Michele Bachmann, but she only appears in one shot in this skit!

Kristen Wiig, Judd Apatow and Co. Offer 9 Things You Didn’t Know About Bridesmaids

For the first time since Bridesmaids premiered this past spring, the comedy’s filmmakers and cast gathered last night in Hollywood for a special Screen Actors Guild Awards screening of their surprise box office smash. Afterward, Judd Apatow (who executive produced the film) moderated a Q&A panel comprised of director Paul Feig, stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy and Wendi McLendon-Covey as well as Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote the screenplay with Wiig. What transpired was an entertaining discussion about the movie “that changed female comedy.” The most exciting revelations follow.

1. Many of Kristen Wiig’s onscreen trials and tribulations are based on the real-life experiences of co-writer Mumolo — including the P.O.S. car.

Mumolo: I did drive that car except mine had the two rearview mirrors hanging off the side and one was sort of duct-taped on. That was my car.

Wiig: Annie was a bridesmaid, I think, seven times in two years. She’s really popular.

Mumolo: Not anymore. But yeah, I was a bridesmaid seven times. One time, two [weddings] at once. I had the experience of watching all of your friends working it out and doing it but not doing it yourself in any way, shape or form. [I remember] going to these fancy engagement parties and coming back to my apartment and having to crawl through the window because the door swells with the weather. You’d have to pull out the air conditioner and climb in — with all of these fancy party favors. Stuff like that.

2. Wendi based her character on horrible moms everywhere — including the ones on Bravo.

Apatow: You fake hatred for kids well.

McLendon-Covey: That’s because so many people I meet and eavesdrop on — that’s one of my special skills on my resume — talk so badly about their kids. It’s just horrifying. You think, “Okay, well someone’s going to kill you in your sleep.” The Real Housewives of Orange County — I take a lot of material from them because those bitches just cannot be placated. They cannot be happy about anything. They’re all rich. They have perfectly nice husbands and they just hate every minute of it.”

3. Rose Byrne had little to no actual bridesmaid experience when she joined this movie.

McLendon-Covey: Poor Rose. She’s from Australia and they don’t do this in Australia. They don’t have bridal showers and all of this stuff. She was like, “What are you talking about? I don’t know what that is.” But she sure picked up on it.

4. All onscreen defecation was real. (Just kidding)

But you did actually poop on the street. Because you’re method, like De Niro.
Apatow: [Joking] But you did actually poop on the street. Because you’re method, like De Niro.

Rudolph: That was real everybody.

Apatow: Melissa too. All real.

McCarthy: It was important for me to make that realistic.

5. At one point, Melissa McCarthy’s character was supposed to be even crazier.

Wiig: We didn’t want to make [Megan] too crazy. At one point I remember we were like, “Should she only dress in rockabilly [clothing]?”

McCarthy: I actually had a four-hour fitting for a rockabilly wardrobe, which was really unflattering.

Feig: We should publish those pictures because I’ve never seen you look less happy.

Wiig: A lot of black bowling shirts with flames. Caring so much about the character, it was that we wanted her to look a certain way but be feminine. […] She could have really long fingernails and wear a pearl necklace but also have a carpal tunnel wrist brace on her arm…

Feig: …that is never explained.

6. Ellie Kemper cannot lie about a bad haircut.

Wiig: [to McCarthy] Remember you had that [very short] wig on and Ellie, who is the most polite person in the world, thought you had cut your hair.

McCarthy: I was in the trailer and Ellie is kind of exactly like she seems in the movie — but smarter, greater and not as crazy. I came in and Ellie [saw my hair] and said [in spot-on Ellie Kemper impression], “Oh! Hi! Look what you did!” I just let her hang. I had a random conversation about traffic because I could tell in her head, she was like “Ohhhhh.”

Finally, I said, “You know it’s a wig, right?” And said “Oh! Oh! God.”

7. The dress fitting scene laden with bathroom humor was not Kristen Wiig’s idea.

Wiig: Judd and Paul threw it out when we were doing a lot of rewrites. You want to have really funny things in the movie but the most important thing is the story. We had to figure out how my character messes up again and again and slowly drives Lillian insane. We had a whole other scene that was in there for awhile and we really needed to up the stakes. OK.” But to Paul and Judd’s credit, it was done in a very nurturing way. They said, “Write your version. If it works, it works.” So Annie and I sat down and wrote…”and then Megan gets up on the sink.”

8. Speaking of the disastrous sink incident, Melissa McCarthy had to do an official jump test before shooting.

McCarthy: I kept thinking [the sink sequence] will probably go away before we shoot. Then there was the moment where they said, “We need you to come and do a jump test to see if the sink is the right height.” The crew guys who had not read the script were looking around like, “What the hell is about to happen?” It was about two hours. They would say, “You’re pretty short and a regular vanity would come up to about here.” I was like, “Why am I having this conversation about my jumping ability!?”

Feig: There were some seriously technical discussions about shitting in a sink.

9. Megan and Air Marshall Jon are married in real life.

McCarthy: My favorite scene [to shoot] was the plane. Kristen kept coming through the [first class curtains] with a completely different character — all so funny. At one point, we had to realize that we couldn’t just be laughing through the takes. And also because I got to work with my husband.

Kristen Wiig may quit "Saturday Night Live" to focus on her film career. A source tells Showbizz411 that the 38-year-old actress may graduate from the NBC late-night show at the end of its 37th season, which was premiered on September 24, now that she has had enough big screen roles on her resume.

The winner of Best Female Comedy Actress at the 1st Annual Comedy Awards made her debut on "SNL" in 2005. She was later promoted to be a full member of the repertory cast at the beginning of the show's 32nd season in 2006.

Wiig has become a hot commodity after taking a lead role on "Bridesmaids", which received critical acclaim and enjoyed a success at box office after it was released in May this year. Talks about plan to make the sequel have since brewed, but Wiig's co-star Jon Hamm recently hinted that she might not return for the possible second film.

For her next big screen appearance, the Lola Bunny of "The Looney Tunes Show" has wrapped the filming for "Friends with Kids" which is expected to come out sometime in 2012. She additionally lands a role on "Imogene".

Is this new? Not especially. But we have another reason why she likely won't return after this season. We already had these reasons...

1. This is the end of Kristen's 6-year contract with SNL. They'd have to sign a new contract with her. I think Lorne would pay her more to keep her on, but she's not like Fred Armisen (9 years) and Seth Meyers (10 years) because she's now a movie star. Also, even Will Ferrell wasn't a movie star when they famously paid him more to extend his contract.

2. Kristen has been acting in films for awhile, and her lead role in Bridesmaids has proven her success.

And now the third reason...

3. A source has mentioned this. They don't give any details, leaving you to assume it was someone who has talked to Kristen about it, but we don't really know that for sure, do we?

Kristen Wiig - set to star in "The Comedian" with Robert Deniro and Sean Penn

Wiig is set to star in "The Comedian." The lead role will be played by Robert DeNiro, in a film written and directed by Sean Penn. Deadline says DeNiro will play "a raging comic past his prime who clings to any recognition that comes from his days as a beloved TV character as he tries to reignite his stagnant career." As for Wiig, she's "a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways."

For the first time since "Into The Wild," Sean Penn is slipping back into the director's chair.

The two-time Oscar winning actor will helm "The Comedian," FilmNation Entertainment announced on Thursday, reuniting with his "Into The Wild" producer Art Linson to direct Robert De Niro and Kristen Wiig in the story of a very unusual relationship.

De Niro will play Jackie Burke, "a raging comic who is past his prime." Desperate to return to the spotlight, he is sentenced to perform community service after hitting an audience member with his microphone, and it is there that he meets Wiig, who plays Harmony, "a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways."

At first glance, it sounds like a distant followup of "The King of Comedy," the Martin Scorsese-directed film in which De Niro played Robert Pupkin, an aspiring comedian who stalks down a late night talk show host.

King of Comedy:

De Niro has mixed drama and comedy in the past decade or so, with the Focker movies dashed in with actioners such as "Righteous Kill," "The Killer Elite," and "Limitless." As for Wiig, she's been one of the hottest commodities in Hollywood since her mega hit "Bridesmaids" took theaters by storm this spring; she'll next star in "Imogen," a drama that she's producing.

Comedian Kristen Wiig, 37, makes many people laugh, but she turned to the serious business of changing her face a few years ago.

In 2007, she was already a regular on “Saturday Night Live” and had landed some movie roles. But she hadn’t achieved her current level of success, including her recent role in the movie “Bridesmaid,” which she co-wrote.

Wiig apparently decided in 2007 that she needed some surgical fine-tuning if she was going to make it bigger in show business.

Her fans weren’t pleased.

The Shine website noted the change in Kristen Wiig’s nose in 2008, commenting that it was “really different, to the point that it’s distracting. She went from a normal-looking woman with a normal-looking nose to a normal-looking woman with a nose that looks like it was sculpted from Play-Doh.”

That website’s editor, Jennifer Romolini, said the nose job was “incredibly upsetting. It’s one thing for superficial mush brains like Paris Hilton to ‘enhance’ themselves. For the most part, that’s all women like her really have. But when a smart, accomplished actress/comedian like Wiig feels the need to alter her appearance, it signifies that something in our society has broken even further.”

“Female comedians are sort of the final frontier in not having to be shellacked and tanned and veneered and stick-skinny and styled. They often look like real people. It’s refreshing,” she said.

The author was likely thinking of someone like Botox opponent Tina Fey.

Before turning to acting, Wiig worked as a graphic artist at a plastic surgeon’s office.

So they make a pretty strong argument that Kristen got a nose job. There's no true confirmation, but several people are very sure of it.

However, both images aren't concrete enough. In the straight shot, she's smiling wider and in the side profile she's smiling wider with the straight nose and pulling her head back and jutting out her jaw with the rounded nose.

Try it now. Smile wide and you'll feel your nose get straighter on the tip. Now jut your jaw out and lift your lips up slightly, and you'll feel more of a ball forming on the end of your nose.

My final verdict is there isn't enough evidence to prove that she's had a nose job and therefore likely hasn't.

However, I am surprised that this hasn't come up in an interview or that she hasn't squashed these rumors (which folks will point to when trying to prove that the rumors are true).

Fred has been on SNL so long, that he's done three different Spanish TV spoofs, and this is the one he's currently focusing on more than the others. The "Besos Y Lagrimas" Telemundo show was an excuse to get Latino hosts making fun of their culture (three of those skits; Kristen was in two of them). Fericito from ¡Show Biz Grande Explosion! was interesting. It was a talk show and Monologue/Weekend Update character who appeared 8 times (mostly 2002-2005). And I know there was one more (maybe with Maya Rudolph?), but I can't find it. He was talking and standing (so it was also a type of Telemundo talk show).

Kristen Wiig: The Anti-Comedian

Kristen Wiig's Saturday Night Live characters respond to social discomfort by talking too much and moving too much. They're a blur of tics and noises. (It's not coincidental that she does a great Kathie Lee Gifford impression.) But in the dimly lit Gordon Ramsay restaurant of her L.A. hotel, in her hipster black knit beret, Wiig is leaning back, sipping green tea and not talking or moving much at all, just being cool. It's awkward but not comic awkward. Normal awkward. Usually performers will answer "How are you?" with enough to fill your notebook. But Wiig didn't do any performing at all until she was in her late 20s. Not college theater, not high school talent shows, not little skits for her parents. In fact, she doesn't really like to speak to crowds. "At parties, I'll start talking and notice everyone is looking at me and feel dumb and say, 'Forget it,' and then start eating things," she says.

Which is how she is in movies — no crazy hair, no crazy eyes, no crazy jumping into other actors' shots. In movies, she's the anti–Will Ferrell. She played indie small in Ghost Town, Adventureland and Extract. After she was in minor roles in two Judd Apatow–produced movies, Knocked Up and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Apatow asked her — as he has Steve Carell, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel — to write a movie that she could star in for his company. So she and Annie Mumolo, a friend from the L.A. improv troupe the Groundlings, co-wrote Bridesmaids, a dude comedy with a chick-flick plot: a single, unemployed woman (Wiig) is asked to be the maid of honor for a friend (Maya Rudolph) who's marrying a rich guy.

It's a smart blend: the Apatow heart squishiness is already built in, and the crude jokes feel new when told from a woman's perspective. We've all seen explosive diarrhea onscreen before — but we haven't seen it from characters trying on wedding dresses. And until now, no film has given nearly enough attention to the plight of mothers changing the sheets of their pubescent sons.

Still, a movie with both fart noises and gowns is a tough sell, and it took four years for Bridesmaids to get made. "Maybe studios don't want to see women acting in a way that isn't womanly," Wiig, 37, says. "Maybe people don't." But the more Wiig devolves into horribleness in Bridesmaids — tearing apart the wedding-shower cake out of jealousy — the more sympathetic she is. "Kristen has this really likable personality that doesn't require her going big," Apatow says. "There are certain people — you love them, but you like seeing them abused. It might be the most important comedy quality: 'I love you, but I want to see horrible things happen to you,'" he adds. "She plays wilted very well," says Mumolo. "It's these boiling emotions inside barely making their way out because she's working so hard to cover them."

Covering her emotions doesn't seem as if it requires a lot of work at the restaurant, as we eat our finger sandwiches. The problem is that Wiig is shy, cool and pretty — not the petri dish of insecurities from which most comedians are made. She loved high school. (Not only was she not in any clubs; she was also one of those people who sneaked into yearbook pictures of the clubs to make fun of them.) At the University of Arizona, Wiig studied art. Then she moved to L.A. and did arty jobs: florist, graphic artist for a plastic surgeon (she illustrated what patients would look like after an operation), decorative painter. When Wiig eases up around people — I've heard — her weird creativity comes out, and she does a lot of voices and imitations. So many that the decorative painter she worked for recommended that she see a show by the Groundlings, the troupe that trained Phil Hartman, Conan O'Brien and Lisa Kudrow.

She zipped through the Groundlings' classes and won tons of stage time performing absurd characters, including a very serious composer who writes music for Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade and a chatty Target salesclerk. By 2005 she was on SNL doing the Target Lady nearly every week. In fact, there are weeks when it feels as though Wiig is in every sketch. "There are two people who arrived fully formed — her and Dana Carvey — where you saw what they did in their audition and you put it on the air," says SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels. "She has that thing that Phil Hartman and Dan Aykroyd had, which is absolute precision, but also this lightness that isn't what they had."

The precision of idiosyncratic looks and gestures is what lets Wiig take one-note characters (a woman who can't keep a secret! A woman who one-ups everyone else's story! A Lawrence Welk–era backup singer with deformed hands!) and make them compelling in their quirkiness. "As much as she goes to extremes and flies off on a broom, her characters are grounded," says Bridesmaids' Rudolph, who also worked with Wiig on SNL. "There's an uncomfortable quality to a lot of them that's painfully funny." Because her characters are simple, she's smart enough to retire them long before other SNL cast members would. She'll no longer do Penelope the one-upper or Gilly the mischievous schoolgirl, not even at Michaels' request.

Otherwise, though, Wiig seems willing to do anything — including making herself unattractive and being physically uncomfortable. In the hilarious, punky MacGruber movie, not only did she dress up as former SNL co-star Will Forte, but she also got in bed with him in 100° heat in New Mexico. "I dripped sweat onto her, body hair falling onto her. You can see these huge droplets of sweat hitting her in the face," Forte says. "I don't remember her even asking any questions about it. It was her birthday also. That was how she spent her birthday — getting mercilessly pounded." Though she didn't complain about it on set, you actually feel for her during the pounding.

"She has that sadness and vulnerability that comics have but don't always show," says three-time SNL host Jon Hamm, who plays Wiig's slimy boyfriend in Bridesmaids and helped cast her as his co-star in the upcoming comedy Friends with Kids. "She's also beautiful. She'd be horrified if she knew I was saying that. This is a lady who can wear coconuts on her boobs and talk out of her butt, but as soon as you say she's pretty, she gets super-embarrassed. She's always shrinking into a hoodie or a knit cap and doesn't want to be noticed, which is adorable."

Yes, adorable, but less so when you're trying to get her to talk about herself. Even she is surprised she is getting all this attention, especially as a comedian, which she didn't see for herself. "I went through my high school yearbook recently," Wiig says. "I was surprised people wrote I had a good sense of humor. I don't remember being funny."

Then we sit there quietly for a moment, putting clotted cream on scones. It's not unpleasant, actually. It's kind of like taking a car ride with a good friend and not needing to talk all the time.

Still, I'm thinking tea was a bad call. The hotel had scotch too.

Where did SNL suddenly get its edginess for this skit? Who wrote this masterpiece?

I'm not sure. I read somewhere that Vince Blake (Bill Hader's character) is a recurring character, but I'm still looking into that.

Anyway, this is edgy because it throws out sexual abuse as jokes, something that the original SNL players wouldn't have been afraid to do (they cut at everything from violence, to beating women, to sexism, to racism... anything edgy). Take Andy Samberg's male Tanya character. The jokes there are that he was sexually abused by his teacher and can't read. Wow. That's intense that (1) They presented those statements as jokes and (2) They got the audience (and me) to laugh at that. Wow.

And then it's super clever, because it is based in this world where the Lifetime movie conditions of life are actually reality (such as the fake raking, all the moms wear similar clothes, all the moms have similar names, all the kids are named Tanya, and Bill Hader's eruptions of control over Anna Farris). They created their own reality that mocks Lifetime movies. It's truly amazing.

Kristen Wiig doesn't get the best lines, but she supports well. The real stars here are Bill Hader, Anna Faris, and Andy Samberg (who makes the audience erupt in laughter without saying anything). Andy is starting to beat Kenan for best looks when never saying a line. =^)

It's time for another GOP debate and Herman Cain expands on his plan to simplify government policy.

Ha! Kenan gets to star in this one as Herman Cain gains in popularity. The actual Cain is a bit of a financial genius (or at least was; he took down the Clinton healthcare package in one evening back when he was the CEO of Godfather), but it's still interesting to see a business man slug it out with governors and senators (and surprising to see him gain traction).

Anyway, Kenan did pretty good here, but I can't help but think they could bring Kenan's version of Cain up a few notches by focusing on the craft of impersonation and make him a little wilder. Maybe they should have Jay Pharoah doing Cain? Heck, if Cain and Obama go at it, SNL could have Jay Pharoah do a double (non-live) impersonation where he plays both Cain and Obama (like how Dana Carvey did George Bush Sr and Ross Perot, which won him an Emmy).

Anyway, Kristen's Bachmann is in a janitor's closet with Bobby's hilarious Newt Gingrich (they should really do a skit around Bobby's Newt). Kristen has a funny bit where she decks Bobby.

Kristen pulls double duty as the announcer and a player (so they obviously recorded her voice beforehand). Kristen also does this later in the episode for the Lifetime gameshow.

This is Kristen's fifth appearance as Bachmann. The first was on 09.17.2009. Wiig never really found a zone with Bachmann, not like Amy Poehler's Hilary Clinton or Tina Fey's Sarah Palin.

Bill Hader messes up once here and Vanessa Bayer messes up multiple times (but she gets her groove going after a rough start).

Likely this was written as the Cold Open, but they came up with something they liked better. Not only is this what they usually do for Cold Opens (politically charged), but Anna Faris isn't in it (also usually reserved for political Cold Opens). However, they still thought it was funny, so they didn't remove it from the show.

Two women stop in the local booktore looking for the 2012 Ferrari calendar, but not because they're into cars.

So a new character (probably last) for Kristen as Anna and Kristen go into a bookstore and go off describing weird men in a calendar.

The audience isn't liking this one, with only one solid laugh in the skit leading up to the hilarious ending with Bill Hader.

But was all the build up worth it. They could have just cut to the end. Obviously some folks thought the descriptions of men and the characters of these ladies were funnier than the audience does.

Kristen Wiig - Road to the Emmys SNL Season 37 - Episodes 1-3

To win an Emmy in her fourth (and probably last) nomination, Kristen has to serve up a regular reminder that she's awesome on SNL. She's at the top of the show (along with Andy and others), so they'll let her do what she wants (that's been the case for a few seasons now).

This is her (probably) last and best chance to win that coveted SNL Emmy (only won so far by cast members Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dana Carvey, Andy Samberg, and Tina Fey).

So here's a state of Kristen Wiig so far this season. She's basically focusing on two big bits/hits per episode, which is similar to what Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell did when they were big on the show (also Dana Carvey and other legends). It's also what Chevy Chase did (to win him an Emmy, get a second nomination, and launch his film career), but Chevy ended up lining up himself to be in every Cold Open and on Weekend Update each week, so he was guaranteed three big roles each week (genius).

Kristen's Season 7 (SNL Season 37):

Episode 1 - Alec Baldwin
1. Red Flag Commercial - Kristen starts us off with a new character, in the form of a commercial, who is attractive but crazy. (Similar concept to Shana, but obviously very different in the type of "attractive", the type of "crazy", and the form (commercial versus skit).) She's going with "new" to show that she's going to give us favorites, but she's also going to show that she's got range and new tricks up her sleeves.
2. Denise Fineman, news reporter - She keeps it going with a second new character; this one is a news reporter (she also has her gay news reporter who comes onto women and her publisher's clearing house reporter who tries to get the winners excited; all three have similar setups). This one's gags are that there's a time delay between the desk reporters and her and that she's had work done on her body so she can't feel the bugs and animals crawling on her awkwardly. Funny stuff!

Episode 2 - Melissa McCarthy
1. Lawrence Welk's Dooneese Cold Open - This is strange because it's the one character known by the man who hosts the show more than the name of character itself. Dooneese is such a favorite that they've done it 6 times now, and they moved it to the Cold Open starting with #3 (and continued since then). It was done twice a season for the first two seasons and only once last season. I think they'll do it one more time this season, in April or May because they did it early this season. This is probably her strongest character that's well known and not annoying (unlike Gilly and Penelope, who Wiig vowed she wouldn't do anymore; she's sick of the negative press).
2. Herself in the Monologue - She starred with Melissa McCarthy in the monologue as they put on a silly dance. This is good exposure for Kristen because she's making herself into a character (worked great for Chevy Chase; also worked well for Eddie Murphy's popularity, even though he didn't win his nominations).

Episode 3 - Ben Stiller1. Nan Washingtom - She unveils a new character on Weekend Update, Nan Washingtom, who awkwardly talks about pancake parties.
2. Shana - The fourth Shana skit. This one features Ben Stiller and is an office Halloween party.

Overall: Kristen's off to a great start! She's unveiled 2 new characters in episode 1 (Alec Baldwin), led with a hit character and played herself as a character in episode 2 (Melissa McCarthy), and gave us one new character and a hit character in episode 3 (Ben Stiller). She's been continuing the formula that made Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal (Billy was a huge hit and did this formula, but it was only for one season due to management changes), Dana Carvey, and Will Ferrell huge stars on SNL.

Here's the breakdown of that formula (it might be obvious by now):
1 - Star in at least two big skits each episode.
2 - Focus on your biggest hit characters.
3 - Try to mix it up with new characters that show your range (you're not out of tricks).
4 - Try to get some bits in there where you play yourself so that the audience can connect with you better.

And then Kristen has a unique problem that she's tackling with her formula:

5 - Retire characters that are funny and hits, but that ulitmately backfired a little and caused negative press because they are a little annoying (which is the point of the skits: to annoy the other characters... but they also might end up annoying the audience too, especially if you repeat them often). Specifically: Kathy Lee, Gilly, and Penelope.

What do you think? Will Kristen earn her first SNL Emmy this year? (Notice I say "first" because Tina Fey won two SNL Emmys after she left the show, and she's also received a third nomination.)

On location in Manhattan, New York for work on their latest project, Kristen Wiig and Darren Criss were spotted filming scenes for their forthcoming flick "Imogene" on September 13.

The pair looked to be in good spirits as they reported for duty in the afternoon, strolling the streets of the big city as they shot clips for their 2013 movie.

Meanwhile, Kristen has just been named to the starring role in "Revenge for Jolly," an indie dark comedy about a man avenging the death of his murdered canine.

The film's cast (Revenge for Jolly) also includes an eclectic array of other actors... Elijah Wood, Ryan Phillippe, and Adam Brody.
