Will Kristen Wiig leave Saturday Night Live (SNL) this year?

Is it time for Kristen Wiig to leave 'SNL'?

This month will probably mark a career pinnacle for Kristen Wiig, who closed out her sixth season as a featured performer on "Saturday Night Live" and received rave reviews at the box office for her star turn in "Bridesmaids." Which may make the following bit of advice for Wiig seem somewhat ill-timed, but here goes.

Leave "SNL." Now. The show will be better off for it, and so will she.

That may seem an especially strange sentiment considering Wiig probably clocks more screen time than any of her cast mates. In a recent New York Times Magazine interview, "SNL" impresario Lorne Michaels suggested she was one of the top "three or four" best performers of all time on the long-running series--a stunning estimation given the talent that has come through there.

But you can see Michaels thinks highly of her. In recent seasons, he has run the tires off of Wiig by overusing her to the point where last season there were episodes where she seemed to be in every single sketch on a given night. Consequently, this past season her stable of recurring characters--Kathie Lee Gifford, Suze Orman, Penelope, Gilly, Target Lady--come across as creatively exhausted. Wiig has acknowledged the overuse herself, having retired some of those characters, but it's too little too late: They've all bled together into one whacked-out shapeshifter that's worn out its welcome.

With the momentum "Bridesmaids" is providing her movie career, Wiig has got to be thinking this is the right juncture to move on to greener pastures. Let's not forget she's not only the star of the film, but its co-writer. Surely she's got ideas she wants to execute that last longer than three minutes. Or maybe NBC has bigger ideas for her, with the network having already successfully transitioned Tina Fey and Amy Poehler from "SNL" to their own primetime vehicles.

As hard as it might be to see a franchise player exit, "SNL" is ready to absorb the loss if Michaels takes a look at the distaff side of his own bench. Vanessa Bayer has had a breakout rookie year, getting recurring assignments like her Miley Cyrus sketch that often take cast mates years to earn. Abby Elliott and Nasim Pedrad have been there a little bit longer, but they're underestimated and underused. Getting Wiig out of the way would force "SNL" to lean on these women more often than it does.

Kristen Wiig in this year's SNL cast photo

Thanks to Freya for the scoop!

Who do you think is going to leave now that the season is over?

- Fred Armisen (been on awhile and has another show)?
- Kenan Thompson (been on awhile)?
- Kristen Wiig (film career)?
- Andy Samberg (films and albums)?
- Bill Hader or Jason Sudeikis (films)

Honestly I don't think Kristen, Andy, Bill, or Jason have anything to go do yet (or not that they have proven).

Kristen's Bridesmaids is doing decently and proving that she can star in films, but is one film enough proof for her to leave and go for it?

Jason's Hall Pass barely survived, but he's got another shot coming up with Horrible Bosses. Bill has even less of a shot, with no starring roles.

Andy has one starring role coming up (I Hate You Dad with Adam Sandler), but he could always do a TV show with TLI or another album.

Enjoy!

Kristen Wiig in Birthing Seminar (SNL)

Sketch - Birthing Seminar

Tina Fey ... mother
Maya Rudolph ... Leilani
Vanessa Bayer ... instructor
Abby Elliott ... mother
Bill Hader ... Victor
Bobby Moynihan ... husband
Nasim Pedrad ... narrator (voice)
Jason Sudeikis ... husband
Kenan Thompson ... Jazarus
Kristen Wiig ... Indica

A birthing video teaches expectant parents a lesson.

I find it interesting that Maya Rudolph has been on SNL 7 times after she left, and she hasn't hosted yet (she hasn't achieved a starring role in a movie or TV show that would make sense for hosting). She's obviously well liked and has solid relationships. That's also the case for films, as it seems that her friends (such as Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids and Jorma and Will Forte in MacGruber) hire her to work with her.

Kristen and Maya are pretty disturbing in this video that Tina and Bobby watch. Definitely amusing and a good use of pregnant Tina and Maya.

Any thoughts on this skit?

Enjoy!

Looking for the Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Kristen Wiig... Liquorville SNL skit?

Let us know if you find it!

Kristen Wiig only did two skits, and her first skit (the first skit after the monologue) was Liquorville, which usually means that's the one they were banking on the most for this episode.

And it makes sense that they were banking on it, when it's a combo of Justin Timberlake, Kristen Wiig, and Lady Gaga...

Sketch - Liquorville

Justin Timberlake ... dancing mascot
Lady Gaga ... spokesperson
Kristen Wiig ... spokesperson

Liquorville is a regular for Justin Timbelake (his dancing mascot), which he started with Chris Parnell in 2003, but this week's version is not online. Justin competed with Will Forte in 2006 and 2009. This time he competed with Kristen Wiig and Lady Gaga.

The usual reason why they don't post videos online is because they used music that they don't own the rights to. Why SNL, why???

Post a comment if you find it!

Kristen Wiig is Mindy Gracin in Secret Word (Justin Timberlake)

Gameshow - Secret Word

Justin Timberlake ... The Mysterious Crandell
Abby Elliott ... contestant
Bill Hader ... Lyle Round
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... Tavi
Kristen Wiig ... Mindy Gracin

It's the game show that the stars play. Just keep the secret word a secret!

Kristen was only in two skits this week, and this was the only regular character she did.

The other skit (Liquorville), is a regular for Justin Timbelake (his dancing mascot), that he started with Chris Parnell in 2003, but it's not online. He competed with Will Forte in 2006 and 2009. This time he competed with Kristen Wiig and Lady Gaga.

I'm not 100% sure why they keep doing this Secret Word skit (this is the 5th time and the 3rd time this season). My guess is that the hosts like the opportunity to play old 60s characters. But even so, there's got to be a better way to do that.

Regardless, it's got funny moments; it's just hard to sustain the humor throughout the whole skit.

What do you think?

Kristen Wiig in Googie Rene SNL skit

Googie Rene's Slightly Damaged Prom Wear Barn

Great deals on formal wear that's been around the block.

This is Kenan's third go at this character. Aren't all Kenan's characters the same?

Kristen does a great job here as the awkward girl.

Kristen Wiig is a singing fetus in the Tina Fey SNL Monologue

Monologue

Tina Fey
Maya Rudolph
Taran Killam ... doctor
Kenan Thompson ... baby
Kristen Wiig ... baby

Tina and Maya open with a song to their unborn babies.

Hahahaha. Kristen loans her vocal chords as Tina Fey's singing fetus.

As a bonus, here's Tina Fey getting messed with by Bill Hader in "Great Women Writers":

That's strange. I don't have that on record as playing on the show. Is this from the dress rehearsal?

Kristen Wiig is Michele Bachmann in GOP Debate

Show - GOP 2012 Undeclared Candidates Debate

Tina Fey ... Sarah Palin
Darrell Hammond ... Donald Trump
Bill Hader ... Shepard Smith
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... Newt Gingrich
Jason Sudeikis ... Mitt Romney
Kenan Thompson ... Jimmy McMillan
Kristen Wiig ... Michele Bachmann

A Republican debate with Sarah Palin, Donald Trump and other undeclared 2012 candidates.

Kristen is pretty funny as a creepy Michele.

This is Kristen's third appearance as Michele.

Wow, this was awesome! Tina, Kristen, and Darrell were hilarious here, with Kenan, Bobby, and Bill supporting well!

Enjoy!
