MacGruber hits DVD and BluRay on September 7th

Who knows? Maybe MacGruber will make some money on DVD. One way to find out...

"MacGruber" can diffuse bombs using his bare hands and everyday objects, but that didn't help it from being the biggest bomb at the box-office this summer. The comedy based on the "SNL"character is getting a second chance on Blu-ray and DVD this September.

"MacGruber" stretches the usually 30-second to 2-minute "SNL" skits to 99 minutes in the comedy which sees the title character, played by Will Forte, being called upon by the government after a decade-long hiatus to find a nuclear warhead stolen by his enemy, the inappropriately named Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). The film also stars Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe.

The Blu-ray and DVD contains two versions of the movie: the original theatrical version, and an unrated version, which features never-before-seen footage removed to keep the film's R-rating, which it was awarded for strong crude and sexual content, violence, language and some nudity, so imagine.

Along with more "MacGruber" back into the film, it also contains a host of special features, including a commentary with director Jorma Taccone, Will Forte, and co-writer John Solomon, a deleted scene, and a gag reel. The Blu-ray features exclusive additional features like BD-Live internet features, pocketBlu interactivity through iPhone and iTouch accessories, and more.

"MacGruber" hits Blu-ray, DVD, digital download and On-Demand on September 7th.

Bad MacGruber review - but good review of Kristen Wiig

This action comedy began life as a sketch on Saturday Night Live that spoofed a 1980s TV series, MacGyver
, about a mullet-headed special agent who preferred not to use a gun.

Instead, he's "good at kickin' * and rippin' throats", and even though Will Forte's title incarnation is also a nincompoop, a narcissist, a coward, and possibly a psychopath, the Pentagon want him out of retirment to foil his arch-enemy-with-an-obscene-name (Val Kilmer – that's not the obscene name). How the 1980s posturing and preening will play with the 14-20 year-old market it's aimed at is uncertain. What I wanted to know: was MacGyver as awful as this? Kristen Wiig lends it a bit of class as the hero's moll, Vicki St Elmo, but Forte is a pain, the scatological crudity unrelenting, and the air of pointlessness unignorable.

I do agree that it was a little tough to like Forte's character. Positve review of Kristen Wiig.

Kristen Wiig - movie update - MacGruber dies in the Box Office

Domestic Total as of Jun. 9, 2010: $8,511,440

Production Budget: $10 million

Still, this is better than Will Forte's last effort, The Brothers Solomon (9/7/07), which made only $900,926.

But not quite as good as Andy Samberg's Hot Rod...

Which made $14,334,401.

So unfortunately The Lonely Island remains unbankable in movies.

So sad. =^(

But on the plus side, while this tanking film doesn't bode well for Will Forte or The Lonely Island, Kristen Wiig has had other momentum to rely on, and so this failure won't affect her career at all!

MacGruber makers battle Shrek

- The Lonely Island

===============

Shrek's been doing some terrorist bombing:

So that was the Lonely Island's tweet (and they have a similar blog post). This basically means that Joni or Jorma wanted to comically downplay MacGruber's biggest film competition (sort of how Austin Powers 2 trailer masterfully told you to watch Star Wars), which is Shrek 4.

Kind of amusing...

Kristen Wiig - SNL big wiig (interview with macgruber clip)

Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig chats about her disguises and the — gasp! — pretty face beneath.

On Saturday Night Live, she's the woman of 1,000 faces — and hairdos, or so it seems. In her five seasons on the show, Kristen Wiig has tucked her tresses into all manner of follicular disguises — from The Target Lady's sensible reverse wedge to Nancy Pelosi's brunette bob — creating and impersonating a cast of quirky and commanding characters (and garnering a 2009 Emmy nomination in the process).

She glams things up a bit when another SNL creation, the lusciously locked Vicki St. Elmo, leaps onto the big screen Friday. MacGruber is based on SNL's popular MacGyver-spoofing sketch of the same name, which stars fellow SNL comic Will Forte.

Wiig, 36, who lives in downtown Manhattan with her boyfriend, actor, writer and filmmaker Brian Petsos, chats with us about her penchant for the peculiar and her growing collection of odd coifs.

The SNL bump
“There's always a soft spot for SNL films,” Wiig says, despite the fact that previous SNL spinoff flicks aren't tops in many Netflix queues.

The star of SNL
Wiig appeared in more Season 34 sketches than any other cast member, according to New York Magazine. But the idea that she carries SNL makes her bristle: “It's an ensemble show. Who's in what, how many sketches It's much more random than people think.”

From among the roughly 40 skits written each week, only nine to 13 get picked. “You don't know what you're in until 11 p.m. on Saturday,” she says. “You could be standing in your costume ready to go on at 11:15 p.m., and a producer could go, ‘Oh, that's been cut.' ”

Laughs and looks
A lot is made of the fact that Wiig, stripped of her disguises — from frumpy sweaters to that frightfully huge forehead she sports as Lawrence Welk-singing sister Dooneese — is really pretty. “It's almost like, ‘Thank you?' But I'll take it. It shows I'm disguising myself well on the show.”

Mean girl
Wiig's own childhood practical jokes weren't nearly as sinister as those of her SNL character Gilly, a naughty schoolgirl. She recalls: “In sixth-grade math [at school in Lancaster, Pa.], when the teacher left the room, I poured a glass of water on his desk,” she says. “When he came back, I told him the ceiling was leaking to postpone class. It was such a dumb idea! And mean!”

Wiig on wigs
How many has she worn? After 20 shows a year for five years, “that would be — 11,000? I'm not really good at math.”

Kristen Wiig sings three songs for the MacGruber soundtrack

When Saturday Night Live-skit-turned-big-screen-fandango MacGruber uncorks in theaters on May 21, it will do so to the soaring synthesizer chords of “Champion,” a triumphantly low-budge theme song from co-star Kristen Wiig (a.k.a. Vicki St. Elmo).

In true MacGruber form, the song—featuring the appropriately monikered U.K. collage-rocker Lightspeed Champion—sounds like it was put together with a Yamaha keytar, a portable mic, a ten-line rhyming dictionary, and a dream. (You can stream it for yourself over at Stereogum.)

Download it here:

http://stereogum.com/download?mp3=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.stereogum.com%2Ffiles%2F2010%2F04%2FChampion/

Wiig’s got two more songs on the soundtracklist in case you needed two more reasons to love her:
01 Corbread Compton & The Silverlake Choir – “MacGruber’s Theme”
02 The Black Keys – “Heavy Soul”
03 Toto – “Rosanna”
04 Gerry Rafferty – “Baker Street”
05 The Hives – “Tick Tick Boom”
06 Emerson, Lake & Powell – “Touch N’ Go”
07 Eddie Money – “Take Me Home Tonight”
08 Quarterflash – “Harden My Heart”
09 Kristen Wiig – “A Perfect Number”
10 Mr. Mister – “Broken Wings”
11 Robbie Dupree – “Steal Away”
12 Kristen Wiig (Feat. MacGruber & Lightspeed Champion) – “Rock My Body”
13 Michael Bolton – “Love Is A Wonderful Thing”
14 Matthew Compton – “The MacGruber Suite”
15 Kristen Wiig – “Champion”

New Kristen Wiig MacGruber high res posters!!!

CBS Films and Universal Studios have sent over a high resolution version of the new MacGruber movie poster. MacGruber stars Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe, Maya Rudolph and Val Kilmer and it’s the feature film version of the Saturday Night Live skit. MacGruber screened at SXSW and I’ve heard from friends it’s very stupid but extremely funny. Sounds like my kind of movie.

MACGRUBER Synopsis and Info:

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts-Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)-MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

Kristen Wiig - MacGruber interview

Kristen Wiig has come up with some of Saturday Night Live’s best characters of the current cast. Her character in the MacGruber movie is not her own, but she gave it her trademark physical bravado.

“I knew when they were writing it, it was going to take place sort of later than the sketch world,” Wiig said. “They were so great and smart to include Maya and have that storyline kind of tied together, because she used to be in the sketches, and I thought it was really cool. And I didn’t know to the extent of what my character was going to do, but I thought the music thing was really funny.”

Wiig plays Vicki St. Elmo, MacGruber’s partner and love interest on a mission to stop Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer). If that sounds crazy, imagine the obligatory sex scene Wiig and Will Forte had to do.

“If you watch the movie again, you will see that I’m fully laughing. I turned my head, and when I saw the screening of it, I was like, ‘They can’t use that take!’ Because I’m fully laughing. No one else noticed it, but I’m turning my head and fully laughing. It was probably 100 degrees, and then when they would cut they would just turn on a little fan. It wasn’t even an air conditioner, it was just like a little fan and we would stand in front of it. We had like sweat and he had his little sock on, and I had this weird nightgown tube thing.”

Forte was obviously on top, so gravity allowed all of his sweat to drip onto Wiig. “Oh, just like drips of sweat coming from the belly button. Bew bew bew!”

The scene goes past the point where it stops being funny, and on to where it becomes funny again. “You have to find that time in between because when it gets to the point when it’s too long, then you get that second wave of people laughing because it’s so long, but you have to figure it out.”

Vicki St. Elmo might not be as broad a character as Gilly, but Wiig knows what to do. “I think you just have to adjust it to what project you’re doing. I think SNL is probably the biggest that I act, just because it’s that charactery comedy stuff. But it just depends on what you’re doing; if you’re doing something in a movie that’s supposed to be understated and real, I try to do that.”

MacGruber opens to theaters on May 21st.

So we get an appearance from Maya Rudolph and find out what happened to her character. I would be in heaven if Shia LeBeuf appeared as MacGruber's son with Andy Samberg as his gay boyfriend.

Also apparently there's a long and brutal love scene between Kristen and Will.
