Maya Rudolph talks about Kristen Wiig

Maya Rudolph has suggested that her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig was born to perform on Saturday Night Live.

Rudolph commented to Paper that Wiig made an immediate impression when she joined SNL in 2005 because she was supremely confident in her talent.

"Kristen came to SNL knowing who she was, which I really envy," said Rudolph, who co-starred with Wiig on the sketch comedy series for several years.

Rudolph continued: "I was 27 when I got there, and not really fully formed, but [Wiig] was an adult, and she immediately just sort of nailed it."

When Wiig herself was asked by the magazine to describe her SNL castmates, the comic joked: "I love the cast. We're like Melrose Place without the murder."

Wiig was recently rumored to be leaving Saturday Night Live at the end of the current season, but her rep has clarified that no decision will be made until next year.

Saturday Night Live continued with host Jimmy Fallon and musical guest Michael Buble at 11.30/10.30c on NBC.

Next Hosts of SNL: Charles Barkley and Daniel Radcliffe

Episode 713 - "Charles Barkley"
Musical Guest: Kelly Clarkson
Date: January 7, 2012

Barkley has hosted twice before. First, on September 25, 1993, he hosted with Nivana as the musical guest.

Second, on January 9, 2010, he promoted his career change into becoming a sports announcer.

Now Charles Barkley is back (likely he was a pleasant variety from the other hosts, so they welcomed him back).

Episode 714 - "Daniel Radcliffe"
Musical Guest: Lana Del Rey
Date: January 14, 2012

This is Daniel's first appearance on SNL. Daniel is of course Harry Potter from the hit film series. I'm surprised he hasn't hosted until after the series.

Daniel's next movie he's promoting is Woman in Black, where he's a young lawyer who travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals. Looks like it's set in the 1800s.

Kristen Wiig on SNL tonight

I'm on the east coast tonight, so I get SNL a few hours earlier.

Kristen had a good week with Greta and a few others. But the standout was her new performance as a flirter on Weekend Update. Fantastic job, Kristen!

This week had guest appearances from Darrell Hammond, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, and Val Kilmer. That was pretty sweet. Alec had the best appearance, where he cleverly covered up hos own mishap that got him in the news (Alec pretended to be a piolot who apologizes to Alec for how he was treated). It's a clever way to subdue bad press for Alec.

More tomorrow!

Enjoy!

I wonder what Kristen Wiig and Katy Perry will do together on SNL? We'll see this Saturday!

Next SNL Hosts: Steve Buscemi, Katy Perry, & Jimmy Fallon

Episode 710 - December 3, 2011

"Steve Buscemi" & The Black Keys

Episode 711 - December 10, 201

"Katy Perry" & Robyn

Episode 712 - December 17, 2011

"Jimmy Fallon" & Michael Bublé

=============

Steve Buscemi has also hosted on 04.04.1998 (he played the Mad Hatter, was in Bill Clinton, Morning Latte, Goth Talk, and Judge Judy skits). He cameo'd on 10.15.1994 when John Travolta hosted (Steve was in "Quentin Tarantino's Welcome Back, Kotter") and he did a filmed cameo on 04.15.2000 when Tobey Maguire hosted.

Katy Perry should be interesting. Katy was a musical guest on 09.25.2010 (Amy Poehler hosted). She got her acting chops going by playing a young woman who was well endowed on Bronx Beat (Maya Rudolph cameo'd) and she cameo'd in Boogerman (a horrible use of Katy Perry in a digital short).

Kristen and Jimmy are hilarious together on the Late Night Show (and they costarred in Whip It). I can't wait to see what they've cooked up together!

Kristen Wiig announces for "Les Jeunes de Paris" (no video ever!!!)

Why isn't it ever online? What's the deal?

Show - Les Jeunes de Paris

Emma Stone ... Juliette
Fred Armisen ... captain
Paul Brittain ... Marius
Abby Elliott ... French girl
Taran Killam ... Francois
Bobby Moynihan ... Stewart
Nasim Pedrad ... French girl
Andy Samberg ... Quasimodo
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)

Andy Samberg played Quasimodo! Hilarious!

My guess is that there's a song in it that NBC doesn't have the rights to. That's why it never makes it online.

What? Lose the song! Edit it out or stop including the song in these skits! Something!!!

So "Les Jeunes de Paris" has been on SNL three times now...

10.23.2010
03.05.2011
11.12.2011

Kristen has always announced for it.

Emma Stone appeared as Juliette in the first episode with it, so naturally it's back for this time when she hosts.

Maybe Emma was involved when writing it, but it seems to be a writing collaboration between the newer guys, Taran, Paul, and Bobby:

Andy Samberg once played a mime:

Even the returning ladies are played by Abby and Nasim, like they're excluding the SNL legends who likely are leaving the show soon...

This is likely Kristen Wiig's last season on SNL

Kristen Wiig may quit "Saturday Night Live" to focus on her film career. A source tells Showbizz411 that the 38-year-old actress may graduate from the NBC late-night show at the end of its 37th season, which was premiered on September 24, now that she has had enough big screen roles on her resume.

The winner of Best Female Comedy Actress at the 1st Annual Comedy Awards made her debut on "SNL" in 2005. She was later promoted to be a full member of the repertory cast at the beginning of the show's 32nd season in 2006.

Wiig has become a hot commodity after taking a lead role on "Bridesmaids", which received critical acclaim and enjoyed a success at box office after it was released in May this year. Talks about plan to make the sequel have since brewed, but Wiig's co-star Jon Hamm recently hinted that she might not return for the possible second film.

For her next big screen appearance, the Lola Bunny of "The Looney Tunes Show" has wrapped the filming for "Friends with Kids" which is expected to come out sometime in 2012. She additionally lands a role on "Imogene".

From:
http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00044221.html

Is this new? Not especially. But we have another reason why she likely won't return after this season. We already had these reasons...

1. This is the end of Kristen's 6-year contract with SNL. They'd have to sign a new contract with her. I think Lorne would pay her more to keep her on, but she's not like Fred Armisen (9 years) and Seth Meyers (10 years) because she's now a movie star. Also, even Will Ferrell wasn't a movie star when they famously paid him more to extend his contract.

2. Kristen has been acting in films for awhile, and her lead role in Bridesmaids has proven her success.

And now the third reason...

3. A source has mentioned this. They don't give any details, leaving you to assume it was someone who has talked to Kristen about it, but we don't really know that for sure, do we?

Kristen Wiig in the musical Anna Faris skit, "Tell Him" (SNL)

So one SNL skit from the Anna Faris episode didn't make it to the Internet.

Musical Sketch - Tell Him

Anna Faris ... girl
Vanessa Bayer ... Kendra
Abby Elliott ... girl
Nasim Pedrad ... girl
Andy Samberg ... waiter
Kristen Wiig ... girl

Andy was a waiter, and the ladies were doing a song in a restaurant.

Summary: 50's-era teenage girls (Abby Elliott, Kristen Wiig, Nasim Pedrad, Anna Faris) use the power of song to teach their confused friend (Vanessa Bayer) how to use deception to land a guy in the modern world.

Kristen Wiig gets the Lawrence Welk Show into the Music Comedy Hall of Fame

Kristen Wiig Earns "The Lawrence Welk Show" Sketch An Induction Into The Music Comedy Hall Of Fame

You know that file you have in your brain labeled “It just never stops being funny”? Well, you can add “The Lawrence Welk Show” sketch from this season’s SNL to that file. Sure it starts out normal enough, but just wait till—you know what we don’t want to ruin a single moment of this sketch.

This musical number will dissolve any doubts you had about whether or not Kristen Wiig is a comedic genius. We are more than pleased to induct it into the Music Comedy Hall of Fame.

And then Kristen Wiig most recently did the skit with Melissa McCarthy in 10/1/11 (her fourth one). I predict that she'll do the skit one more time this season, in about April or May.

Kristen Wiig - Road to the Emmys SNL Season 37 - Episodes 1-3

To win an Emmy in her fourth (and probably last) nomination, Kristen has to serve up a regular reminder that she's awesome on SNL. She's at the top of the show (along with Andy and others), so they'll let her do what she wants (that's been the case for a few seasons now).

This is her (probably) last and best chance to win that coveted SNL Emmy (only won so far by cast members Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dana Carvey, Andy Samberg, and Tina Fey).

So here's a state of Kristen Wiig so far this season. She's basically focusing on two big bits/hits per episode, which is similar to what Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell did when they were big on the show (also Dana Carvey and other legends). It's also what Chevy Chase did (to win him an Emmy, get a second nomination, and launch his film career), but Chevy ended up lining up himself to be in every Cold Open and on Weekend Update each week, so he was guaranteed three big roles each week (genius).

Kristen's Season 7 (SNL Season 37):

Episode 1 - Alec Baldwin
1. Red Flag Commercial - Kristen starts us off with a new character, in the form of a commercial, who is attractive but crazy. (Similar concept to Shana, but obviously very different in the type of "attractive", the type of "crazy", and the form (commercial versus skit).) She's going with "new" to show that she's going to give us favorites, but she's also going to show that she's got range and new tricks up her sleeves.
2. Denise Fineman, news reporter - She keeps it going with a second new character; this one is a news reporter (she also has her gay news reporter who comes onto women and her publisher's clearing house reporter who tries to get the winners excited; all three have similar setups). This one's gags are that there's a time delay between the desk reporters and her and that she's had work done on her body so she can't feel the bugs and animals crawling on her awkwardly. Funny stuff!

Episode 2 - Melissa McCarthy
1. Lawrence Welk's Dooneese Cold Open - This is strange because it's the one character known by the man who hosts the show more than the name of character itself. Dooneese is such a favorite that they've done it 6 times now, and they moved it to the Cold Open starting with #3 (and continued since then). It was done twice a season for the first two seasons and only once last season. I think they'll do it one more time this season, in April or May because they did it early this season. This is probably her strongest character that's well known and not annoying (unlike Gilly and Penelope, who Wiig vowed she wouldn't do anymore; she's sick of the negative press).
2. Herself in the Monologue - She starred with Melissa McCarthy in the monologue as they put on a silly dance. This is good exposure for Kristen because she's making herself into a character (worked great for Chevy Chase; also worked well for Eddie Murphy's popularity, even though he didn't win his nominations).

Episode 3 - Ben Stiller1. Nan Washingtom - She unveils a new character on Weekend Update, Nan Washingtom, who awkwardly talks about pancake parties.
2. Shana - The fourth Shana skit. This one features Ben Stiller and is an office Halloween party.

Overall: Kristen's off to a great start! She's unveiled 2 new characters in episode 1 (Alec Baldwin), led with a hit character and played herself as a character in episode 2 (Melissa McCarthy), and gave us one new character and a hit character in episode 3 (Ben Stiller). She's been continuing the formula that made Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal (Billy was a huge hit and did this formula, but it was only for one season due to management changes), Dana Carvey, and Will Ferrell huge stars on SNL.

Here's the breakdown of that formula (it might be obvious by now):
1 - Star in at least two big skits each episode.
2 - Focus on your biggest hit characters.
3 - Try to mix it up with new characters that show your range (you're not out of tricks).
4 - Try to get some bits in there where you play yourself so that the audience can connect with you better.

And then Kristen has a unique problem that she's tackling with her formula:

5 - Retire characters that are funny and hits, but that ulitmately backfired a little and caused negative press because they are a little annoying (which is the point of the skits: to annoy the other characters... but they also might end up annoying the audience too, especially if you repeat them often). Specifically: Kathy Lee, Gilly, and Penelope.

What do you think? Will Kristen earn her first SNL Emmy this year? (Notice I say "first" because Tina Fey won two SNL Emmys after she left the show, and she's also received a third nomination.)

Enjoy!

Kristen Wiig - Will She Retire Gilly and Penelope?

We'll see this season, which could be her last on SNL (because her contract ends this year)...

Kristen Wiig to retire Gilly and Penelope characters on 'SNL': Good riddance?

Sorry? In a recent Time article about Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig (whose painfully funny flick Bridesmaids opens in theaters next week), it’s reported that two of the love ‘em or hate ‘em characters she’s created for the show — Gilly and Penelope — are about to be gone for good.

As the mag notes, the decision did not come at the request of SNL creator Lorne Michaels, who not only praised Wiig in this article (he compares her to vets like Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, and Dan Aykroyd), but also told the New York Times just last week that he would place her in the top three or four performers all-time on the show. But rather, Wiig herself has decided it’s time to pull the plug on the trouble-making child Gilly and the one-upping chatterbox that is Penelope.

Despite having her very own Christmas special, it’s safe to say Gilly has been one of the more unpopular characters on the show in a while. It’s no slight at Wiig though — most SNL recurring characters, particularly the ones that border on annoying from the get-go (see: Chris Kattan’s Mango… or Mr. Peepers), tend to outstay their welcome faster than others. And though part of me will miss Penelope — though, let’s face it, there really are only so many more things she can brag about — I’m just grateful she didn’t give Junice the axe. I would have cried into my tiny baby hands over that one.

From:
http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/05/03/kristen-wiig-gilly-penelope-retired/

In an interview with TIME, Kristen Wiig reveals she's killing off two of her most beloved SNL characters:

"The precision of idiosyncratic looks and gestures is what lets Wiig take one-note characters (a woman who can't keep a secret! A woman who one-ups everyone else's story! A Lawrence Welk–era backup singer with deformed hands!) and make them compelling in their quirkiness. "As much as she goes to extremes and flies off on a broom, her characters are grounded," says Bridesmaids' Rudolph, who also worked with Wiig on SNL. "There's an uncomfortable quality to a lot of them that's painfully funny." Because her characters are simple, she's smart enough to retire them long before other SNL cast members would. She'll no longer do Penelope the one-upper or Gilly the mischievous schoolgirl, not even at Michaels' request."

You can take the poll here, where 39% are sad to see Kristen's two popular/annoying characters go, 37% are glad to see them go, and 23% don't care (because she has other great characters):

Emmys 2011: Making a Case for Kristen Wiig

There’s a special dedication to the craft of humor that exists in a select few comedians and comic actors—what separates the good from the great is their willingness to do anything for a laugh. The great ones are willing to completely debase themselves, experiment with the absurd and the dangerous, and throw themselves entirely into a performance. With that in mind, one contemporary comedian comes immediately to mind: Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig.

Wiig’s performances are never underwhelming. They are often outlandish, regularly scene-stealing and frequently unflattering. She plays inherently dislikeable characters that are somehow impossible not to love.

Oftentimes, sketch comedians are branded with certain character types they’re forced to revive over and over again. Wiig, on the other hand, exemplifies an insuperable versatility; she plays obnoxious and bawdy as terrifically as she plays skittish and neurotic. Even her formulaic characters, such as the one-trick pony Penelope (the “topper”), are consistently enjoyable watches.

As ostentatiously silly as Wiig is, an incredible respect for her work emanates from her in every performance. She seems to hold all of her characters and skits in the same high regard; she puts her all into sketches wherein she may not even be the comedic focus. What she seems to hold in the highest esteem is the production of laughter. Whether she is the one directly inciting that laughter, or she is simply helping to set the scene for another SNL cast member’s spotlight, she is always very clearly investing all of her talent and passion into her act.

In addition to her dedication, Wiig’s comedic momentum is boundless. She handles demanding roles tirelessly. She is in many ways a physical comedian—rarely will there be an episode of Saturday Night Live in which Wiig is not challenged to bounce around the stage for one reason or another. But her subdued performances are often even stronger. With tiny glances and glimmers, Wiig delivers nuanced, unforgettable characterizations.

There is more to her characters than just a playing up of eccentricities and the wickedly irresistible tool of slapstick. Wiig's performances are more than funny; they are inviting and gripping. None of her characters' jokes or quirks would be so markedly powerful were it not for the earnest charm that the actress carries with her at all times. It’s not simply the likeability with which she was fortunate enough to be born—she is, at all times, with every piece of dialogue and action, working so admirably hard to construct a character we cannot help but fall in love with. And beyond her ambition are her talent and knowhow; she gives us everything she has. And everything she has is filled with a definitive understanding of the craft of comedy and graceful skill -- something few comedians are lucky enough to exemplify.

Wiig is the best thing Saturday Night Live has to offer today. She deserves to be remembered among the comic greats the show has spawned. Her attitude and abilities are remarkable, and her career in film and television from this point forward promises nothing but excitement.

Could Kristen Wiig be a potential Emmy upset?

Kristen Wiig (supporting actress in a comedy): While there is no real dark horse in the supporting actor in a comedy category, Wiig definitely has that label on the women's side. No one from "SNL" has ever won an acting Emmy in the major categories, but the "Bridesmaids" effect may come into play here once again. Besides, Wiig has been carrying the show ever since Amy Poehler left; there's got to be an award for that, right?

See other potential upsets here:

Jimmy Fallon correctly predicted that he'd host SNL

In December 2011!

And he predicted back in December 1998!!!

Well, we've been hoping and asking for it for awhile, and it's finally coming this season!

Not only is this video a hilarious peek at vintage Baldwin and Fallon, it also reveals something astonishing: Jimmy Fallon is clearly psychic.

During this 1998 Christmas video, Fallon, while playing the "ghost of host future," shows a reluctant Baldwin a world where he comes back to host the show as a SNL alum.

"Apparently," he says. "I become a huge star in the future, and I host the show in 2011."

And just like that, it came true.

Fallon is scheduled to host the show alongside crooner Michael Bublé only a few days after his December 17 prediction.

Creepy!

Take a minute and watch it for yourself, or if you're in a hurry, skip to 02:55.
Excerpt (s.24 : ep.9) 05:47
The ghost of SNL future Jimmy Fallon haunts Alec and 8H:

Or this video here shows it at the beginning:
http://videos.nymag.com/video/Alec-Baldwin-and-Jimmy-Fallon-I#c=7399XM25LXLCYXJ8

Jimmy Fallon announced today that he's going to host the December 17 episode of Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Michael Buble. It marks Fallon's first time hosting since he left the show in 2004, but fans shouldn't be too surprised to see him back in Studio 8H — not only has he done cameos on the show here and there, but back in 1998, SNL itself announced he'd host right around then. As you can see in the video, Alec Baldwin's monologue from a season 24 episode predicts exactly this: That Jimmy Fallon, as the host of Christmas future in this Christmas Carol riff, will host in December 2011. Most people remember this episode for its Schwetty Balls, but perhaps its prescience will become its new calling card!

Kristen Wiig - Prepare for the Michele Bachmann onslaught on SNL!!!

So we might as well state the obvious...

We're going to watch this year to see if Kristen Wiig can turn her Michele Bachmann impression into an SNL classic (like Tina Fey's Sarah Palin).

Three and Four years ago, Amy Poehler brought home her Hilary Clinton impression and Tina Fey brought us her Sarah Palin impression. Both of those impressions lit the ladies careers on fire. Tina won an Emmy from it (and another nomination), and Amy was also nominated from it (and went on to star in her own show).

Therefore, since Kristen has received a few Emmy nominations already (from SNL), she could actually get a win if she portrays Michele Bachmann this season in a hilarious and memorable way.

So far, Kristen's humor with Bachmann has been centered around witch gags, media gags, and the such. She needs to up her game and find a "personality" for her Bachmann impression that is fun and silly.

Wiig's Bachmann impression:

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann gives the Tea Party's State of the Union response another try, visual aids.

Building the person into a likable (yet often crazy) personality, is what makes the best SNL impressions... Fey's Palin, Poehler's Hilary Clinton, Darrell Hammond's Bill Clinton, Dana Carvey's George Bush Sr., Carvey's Ross Perot, and Will Ferrell's George W. Bush. Even Sudeikis' Biden and Norm Macdonald's Bob Dole had moments of greatness. (Armisen's Obama is clearly lacking the character from those other roles.)

So let's see if Kristen Wiig can step up her impression game and make her Bachmann a fun character to watch.

Enjoy!

Kristen Wiig is returning to SNL for Season 37

We're back! Since Kristen is now a hit-maker with Bridesmaids, our goal is to post on this site at least three times a week!

Wikipedia makes it blatantly clear that Kristen Wiig and all the other cast members are returning for season 37, by piecing together all the Web information...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Live_(season_37)

In addition to Lorne saying "everyone will return" in a press conference, Bill, Seth, Jason, Andy, and Kristen (all the hottest stars, basically) have said they'd return in separate interviews.

--

Here is that press conference where Lorne mentions everyone will return...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/02/lorne-michaels-says-all-snl-cast-members-returning_n_916013.html

For the first time since 2009, no "Saturday Night Live" cast members will depart the show before the next season. According a tweet from TV critic Roger Catlin, executive producer Lorne Michaels made the announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour.

Michaels also added that he would hold auditions for new cast members the end of August. "SNL" featured player Jay Pharoah announced on Twitter that the premiere would be Sept. 24, although the tweet has since been removed.

========================

So Kristen and pals are obviously coming back. It's also interesting that Lorne is holding more auditions in August. He might be looking for one or two last minute featured players to add. It sounds like he knows he's going to lose all his big brass for Season 38, and he wants to get as many potential stars in there as possible.

It seems that Andy, Bill, Kristen, and Jason all signed to work through Season 37. So all four will likely leave for Season 38, especially since...

1. Kristen Wiig hit big with her first starring role turning into a blockbuster (Bridesmaids), and she's already lined up Friends with Kids and Imogene (she's producing and starring in the latter).

2. Andy Samberg is booking starring films opposite Adam Sandler (I Hate You Dad) and Rashida Jones (Celeste and Jesse Forever), and he could easily do another album or show.

3. Jason Sudeikis was off to a bumpy start when starring in Owen Wilson's Hall Pass, but he's proved he can hit gold by starring opposite Jason Bateman in Horrible Bosses. (He needs to follow it up quick.)

4. Bill Hader has the most successful supporting film career of the cast, and he's got his first starring role lined up in 2013's Skeleton Twins, opposite Anna Farris (Andy is in her "What's Your Number?" this year).

5. Seth Meyers is a little behind in the film world (he's racking up some supporting roles), so he wrote his own starring role in Key Party (2013). If his film career doesn't pan out, he can "retire" into a talk show host for as long as he wants.

And then Fred and Kenan are getting stale, but they can also pick up supporting TV roles when Lorne's ready for them to leave (Fred is voicing Brainy Smurf and can pick up other TV and supporting roles since it looks like Portlandia might not be working out). Lorne will probably ask them to stay (and they probably will, since SNL is their biggest thing) for a year to three after the big guns leave (Andy, Kristen, Jason, and Bill).

That leaves the future of SNL squarely on the shoulders of Bobby Moynihan, Abby Elliott, and newbies: Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam, Paul Brittain, and Vannessa Bayer. Jay has the biggest potential, if he can learn to build out more characters. Second is Taran if he can be more aggressive getting his characters and impressions on air (it seems like he and Lorne are waiting for the others to leave to feature Taran more by necessity). Paul also has a lot of potential. Vanessa and Jay shone bright their freshman year due to their impressions (Vanessa's Miley was the biggest).

However, Abby and Vanessa aren't enough of a woman team, especially since Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Kristen Wiig shone so bright).

So I can see how Lorne's thinking of the future. He's likely targeting funny woman (something he's been focusing on for years, thus the high turnover of ladies lately). He might do well to bring back Michaela Watkins as well as bringing on a new woman(especially in Wiig's absence).

Enjoy!
