Bridesmaids coming on May 13, 2011!

Happy New Year!

This is just a gentle reminder that Bridesmaids is coming up!

“Bridesmaids” (May 13)
Before you say, “‘Bride Wars,” this has a great cast (Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm) and Judd Apatow producing.

More 2011 movies here:
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bthesite/blog/2010/12/2011_looking_forward_all_the_n.html

Their little blurb has a good point though. It's ironic that this concept isn't too far from Bride Wars and that Bride Wars was written by Kristen's former SNL costar, Casey Wilson (who also played a small role in it). That said, this is good business. Bride Wars is long gone and so this one shouldn't hurt it. If anything it might boost its DVD sales slightly.

Enjoy!

Did SNL get the Kristen Wiig memo?

...In February of last year, I wrote a rant where I complained about the overexposure of Wiig, who was at one time my favorite new "SNL" cast member. But the exposure itself wasn't the problem – it was Wiig's tendency to play characters that, if they showed up at a party you were at, you would leave the party. She never played anyone sweet, or friendly, or even just strange. Her characters all had one thing in common: they were incredibly annoying. And they were in every other skit. I'd had enough, and so I posted "Memo to Saturday Night Live: Kristen Wiig must be stopped." ...

And that's why I feel so awful. I never intended to be the lightning rod for the 'Kristen Wiig sucks' movement, because she doesn't suck. She's actually very talented, but has a weakness for playing obnoxious people...

I just watched the episode that Scarlett Johannson hosted, and Kristen had one lead skit (the one-upping Penelope). One. In everything else, she was a co-lead or not in the scene at all, and for me, it made for a much more enjoyable viewing experience, especially since it opens up space for "The Miley Cyrus Show" (my new favorite recurring skit) and Jay Pharoah, who's got 'breakout star' written all over him...

So thank you, "Saturday Night Live," for righting the ship. You are now a hundred times more watchable than you were just a few months ago.

====================================

Okay, so the author seems to be in this world where he thinks he is the one who did this and SNL listened to him. The truth is that there were a good half dozen similar articles like this all written about the same time, and this one was not the most popular. (The most popular one got featured on Yahoo.)

That said, he's right on. I watched them pull Kristen back a little, and it's really helped the show and helped us enjoy her bits when she only leads one or two a night. However, it hasn't opened up a lot of great writing, so we'll see what happens next.

Ed Burns to join Kristen Wiig in Friends with Kids

Ed Burns teams up with Megan Fox and Kristen Wiig in Friends With Kids

Ed Burns has joined the cast of the upcoming dramedy FRIENDS WITH KIDS that is the directorial debut of Jennifer Westfeldt (KISSING JESSICA STEIN). The film already has an impressive cast that includes: Megan Fox, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, and John Hamm. The film follows a group of friends in their thirties who are observing the hardships other couples have raising kids and they decide to bypass all those problems by having kids and dating other people.

Ed Burns will hop on board as a guy who is actually a good parent but in the middle of a divorce. His wife will be played by director Jennifer Westfeldt. FRIENDS WITH KIDS will be released sometime in 2011.

Kristen Wiig announces on Jeff'd (SNL)

Show - Jeff'd
Jeff Bridges
Paul Brittain ... Stevie
Abby Elliott ... Maggie Gyllenhaal
Taran Killam ... clerk
Andy Samberg ... Billy Bob Thornton
Jason Sudeikis ... Sam Elliott
Kenan Thompson ... Forest Whitaker
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)

Hahahaha. This is actually very funny. The joke of course is how lame the pranks are and how kind Jeff is, even in his pranking.

Kristen is a great announcer!

"I'm just kidding. You got Billy-Bobbed!" Hahahahaha. Classic Andy.

This is Andy's third Billy Bob impression on SNL. I think Andy could lead a skit or a solid Weekend Update appearance with his Billy Bob impression. Make it happen!

This is the first Maggie Gyllenhaal impression on SNL. It's Jason's second Sam Elliott impression, and Dan Aykroyd also did Sam Elliott once (05.17.2003) and an arguably better job. This is SNL's first Forest Whitaker impression.

Enjoy!

Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Andy Samberg ... Rahm Emanuel
Jason Sudeikis ... Joseph Biden
Kenan Thompson ... Frosty The Snowman
Kristen Wiig ... Nancy Pelosi

The Christmas season has democrats dreaming of much merrier headlines in 2011

This is Kristen's 10th portrayal as Nancy Peloci, ever since 11.11.2006 with "A Message from the Speaker Elect." Nancy has also been played by Cameron Diaz and Amy Poehler, once each, but Kristen has the most popular SNL impression of Nanci Pelosi.

Kenan Thompson ... chef
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)

Show your cat what fine dining is all about with Pet Chalet's Feline Culinary Creations.

Kristen is the announcer here. I don't know what was going on in this episode. But I only saw a few jokes in this commercial, and I didn't find them very funny.

Kristen needs to lead in a skit this week!

Kristen Wiig announces in Sexually Speaking (SNL)

Bill Hader ... Leonard
Bobby Moynihan ... Mr. Shimpley
Nasim Pedrad ... Stacy Englands
Kristen Wiig ... announcer (voice)

Dr. Linda Marie Choice is out, so producer Roger Brush is filling in and answering questions.

Roger Brush returns for the fourth time (twice last season and twice this season). He's a little painful to watch. Every time he's messing up a new show...

11.21.2009 - Woman To Woman
04.17.2010 - Teen Talk
09.25.2010 - Maternity Matters
12.11.2010 - Sexually Speaking

Kristen has played the announcer in every episode.

Kristen Wiig gets felt up as Mrs. Vogelcheck (SNL)

I wonder how many SNL cast members and guests have felt up Kristen Wiig by now? My count is 4... The Rock (The Rock Obama), Jason Sudeikis (So You Committed a Crime), Jon Hamm (Vincent Price Halloween Special), and now Bill Hader (Vogelchecks). There might even be more.

Sketch - Affectionate Family

Paul Rudd ... Austin Vogelcheck
Fred Armisen ... Mr. Vogelcheck
Vanessa Bayer ... Amanda
Paul Brittain ... Vlad
Bill Hader ... Dwayne Vogelcheck
Bobby Moynihan ... stranger
Nasim Pedrad ... Elena
Kristen Wiig ... Mrs. Vogelcheck

Kristen is felt up at 1:35. Wow. The audience can't even believe it.

Kristen Wiig also jingles Bobby Moynihan's bell as he walks by. Merry Christmas from the Vogelchecks!

For those who don't know, this is the fourth appearance of the Vogelchecks. Paul Rudd was in the first one as well...
11.15.2008
12.19.2009
03.06.2010
12.11.2010

Kristen has been in all four Vogelcheck skits as Mrs. Vogelcheck. The three consistant actors have been Fred, Bill, and Kristen. The rest change almost every skit.

Even though Kristen's a regular in the skit, I wouldn't call this a lead role (the true leads here are Paul, Vanessa, and Fred). So she's got two supporting roles this week and two voice roles. We'll she if Kristen gets a lead role next week.

Kristen Wiig on What's That Name? (SNL Game Show)

Gameshow - What's That Name?

Paul Rudd ... Jake
Vanessa Bayer ... Carolyn
Bill Hader ... Vince Blight
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Kenan Thompson ... Norman
Kristen Wiig ... Mary

Contestants have to guess the names of pictured celebrities and people they should know for cash prizes!

Kristen Wiig's gag starts at 2:06.

So Kristen was only in 2 skits this week with another 2 announcer credits. This week seemed to be a Paul McCartney concert without a lot of powerful skits. Thoughts?

Megan Fox Joins Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig in 'Friends With Kids'

Megan Fox is joining "Friends With Kids," an ensemble comedy from Jennifer Westfeldt.

The project already has cast Adam Scott and Kristen Wiig for the story, which revolves around a pair of thirtysomething best friends who observe the toll that having kids has taken on the couples they know and resolve to bypass that stress by having a child and then date other people.

Scott and Westfeldt will play the lead couple; Wiig and Hamm will play another. A third couple has not been cast.

Fox will play a girl who Scott begins to date.

"It's a very literate script and when Jen met with her, she thought Megan was spot on. When (Fox) picks the right part, she has tremendous value," said Cinetic Media's John Sloss, who is handling sales.

The movie will be released theatrically in April.

Sketch - Blizzard Man

Robert DeNiro ... mother
Sean "Puffy" Combs
Andy Samberg ... Blizzard Man
Jason Sudeikis ... agent
Kenan Thompson ... technician
Kristen Wiig ... agent

No laughs when the audience first heard "Blizzard Man." That means they either hadn't heard of it, or they don't like it. I think it's the first one, the way they laughed when they saw Andy.

This is Andy's fourth run at Blizz, and De Niro brings it back alive! Nice!

Here are the other runs...

11.18.2006 - Ludacris

01.20.2007 - Common and Jeremy Piven

11.22.2008 - Ludacris, T-Pain, and Tim McGraw

12.04.2010 - Puff Daddy and Robert De Niro

Kristen has some hilarious facial expressions here!

They also went with the opposite news header at the end. In the past the newspaper always told about a failure of a song.

I Love this! Did you like it?

2010
- (nom) Supporting Actress: Kristen Wiig
- (nom) Guest Actress: Tina Fey (host)
- (win) Guest Actress: Betty White (host)

It's interesting to look at the list and see that the only winners (who were players) are Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Dana Carvey, and Tina Fey. But the list makes more sense as you see all the names (of those who were players):
  • Chevy Chase
  • John Belushi
  • Gilda Radner
  • Dan Aykroyd
  • Jane Curtain
  • Eddie Murphy
  • Joe Piscopo
  • Billy Crystal
  • Jon Lovitz
  • Dana Carvey
  • Phil Hartman
  • Mike Meyers
  • Molly Shannon
  • Will Ferrell
  • Tina Fey
  • Amy Poehler
  • Kristen Wiig

Anyway, it's still a pretty accurate list (I also think Bill Murray is great, but it makes sense that he wasn't nomincated because he didn't break out above his co-actors until his movies). (There were many late bloomers on SNL who didn't break out until after they left the show: Bill Murray, Jim Belushi, Martin Short, Conan O'Brien, Damon Wayans, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Jay Mohr, and Rob Riggles.)

Kristen Wiig also has the distinction of being nominated multiple times. That is a shorter list of SNL players:
  • Chevy Chase
  • John Belushi
  • Gilda Radner
  • Eddie Murphy
  • Jon Lovitz
  • Dana Carvey
  • Tina Fey
  • Amy Poehler
  • Kristen Wiig

Kristen Wiig tells Anne Hathaway not to get naked (SNL Monologue)

Anne talks about her thought process on doing nude scenes in her work.

Kristen Wiig is Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries (SNL)

Commercial - Horse Play

Anne Hathaway ... Alanis Morissette
Fred Armisen ... Randy Newman
Danielle Flora ... dancer
Bill Hader ... announcer (voice)
Andy Samberg ... Robert Smith
Jason Sudeikis ... Adam Lambert
Kenan Thompson ... Cee Lo
Kristen Wiig ... Dolores O'Riordan

A heart-warming film about a team of horses who wanted to play baseball has a soundtrack.

I'm not always the biggest fan of these "Hey let's come up with a make believe kids movie and then have our players impersonate musicians who would create songs for the soundtrack" skit ideas, but, wow. The cast really takes it and runs with it. (This is a semi-sequel to "Bunny Business" on 11.07.2009.)

Kristen's Cranberries singer was the first time on SNL. This is the first Robert Smith impression on SNL. Cheri Oteri did Alanis Morisette once on 11.14.1998. Jason's second take on Adam Lambert (and he's the only SNL player to do it). Kenan's Cee Lo was the first time on SNL. Fred is the one person to bring his impression back from Bunny Business. Fred's second take on Randy Newman (and the only SNL player to do it).

Here are my rankings in how awesome these impressions were (and hilarious)...

1. Kristen Wiig ... Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries) - Wow. Kristen gets first place just for nailing the voice so amazingly well. The "Oats" part at the end was good too.

2. Andy Samberg ... Robert Smith - Andy nails the voice, look, and hand motions. The crying at the end really makes it great.

3. Fred Armisen ... Randy Newman - A hilarious butchering of Randy's voice. Too short though.

4. Anne Hathaway ... Alanis Morissette - Anne really gets into this. It would have been higher on the list if it was funnier.

5. Jason Sudeikis ... Adam Lambert - Probably the best gag of the skit, and he looks great, but it's mostly just a gag. No singing here. Still the humor in itself gave him the edge over Kenan.

6. Kenan Thompson ... Cee Lo - A great impression, but not really funny.

============

And just for fun, here was the lineup on Bunny Business...

Taylor Swift ... Shakira
Fred Armisen ... Randy Newman
Abby Elliott ... Christina Aguilera
Bill Hader ... announcer (voice)
Bill Hader ... Eddie Vedder
Andy Samberg ... Adam Duritz
Kenan Thompson ... Jennifer Hudson
Kristen Wiig ... Natalie Merchant

Abby Elliott wasn't even in this one (she usually does impressions of singers). It's amazing how many talented singers SNL has.

Kristen just knocked this one out of the park and ruled it.

Enjoy!

Kristen Wiig - is Nancy Pelosi in the Rachel Maddow Cold Open (SNL)

Cold Opening - The Rachel Maddow Show

Abby Elliott ... Rachel Maddow
Bill Hader ... John Boehner
Kenan Thompson ... Charles Rangel
Kristen Wiig ... Nancy Pelosi

Rachel Maddow has on John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi and embattled Rep. Charles Rangel.

Kristen has portrayed Nancy Pelosi 9 times now, with the first being in 11.11.2006, during her second season on SNL. Before Kristen, Cameron Diaz and Amy Poehler did Nancy, but Kristen is the most famous SNL Nancy impressionist.

Hope you liked it!

Kristen Wiig is Penelope (Free Thanksgiving Dinner) - SNL

Sketch - Penelope: Free Thanksgiving Dinner

Anne Hathaway ... Mary
Bill Hader ... Pastor Mike
Bobby Moynihan ... guest
Michael Patrick O'Brien ... volunteer
Nasim Pedrad ... Lisa
Kenan Thompson ... Lou
Kristen Wiig ... Penelope

Penelope shows up at a local charity kitchen and dominates the Thanksgiving dinner.

Ah, classic Penelope!

This is Kristen's 7th go at Penelope:
03.24.2007
05.12.2007
09.29.2007
03.08.2008
01.10.2009
11.07.2009
11.20.2010

That's twice in the 07-08 season (Kristen's third season), twice in the 07-08 season, once in 08-09, once in 09-10, and now once so far in 10-11. So she's been doing it once every season for the past three seasons now. A good way to continue a character without overdoing it (since it is popular but not exactly the Spartan Cheerleaders).

Kristen Wiig on the Manuel Ortiz Show (SNL)

Manuel tries to get to the bottom of some infidelity among friends and settles it with a paternity test.

Andy's got the best dancing here, followed closely by Taran. Kristen Wiig works over the crowd well with a slow and then fast dance. I think the gag of slowing and speeding up the music is what saved this and made it different enough than the last version.

What's interesting is that Fred has had three different styles of Spanish shows that he has made fun of over the years.

Kristen Wiig & Lorainne Newman - Edgy Comedians (People magazine)

Now & Then Edgy Comedians

Saturday Night Live Vet Laraine Newman and Current Star Kristen Wiig Talk About How Comedy—and Censorship Standards—Have Changed

KRISTEN WIIG
Age: 36.
Currently in her fifth SNL season, Wiig has also made her mark in films like Knocked Up and Adventureland.

LARAINE NEWMAN
Age: 57.
There at the start of SNL, Newman has since found success voicing animation. "I love it," says the mother of two teens. "It lets me be a mom."

Are you fans of each other's characters?
NEWMAN: Oh God, yes.

WIIG: I don't know a lot of the names, but of course Connie Conehead, and the Valley Girl—

NEWMAN: Sheri, yeah. I tried never to repeat characters. It was dumb of me because it kind of made me invisible.

WIIG: I don't think you were ever invisible.

And Laraine?

NEWMAN: Where do I start? The two A-holes, and the Target Lady, and Aunt Linda—everything!

Has SNL's comedy changed in 35 years?

NEWMAN: I look at it kind of like the Olympics: What gymnasts could do in 1975 is nothing compared to what they can do now.

WIIG: I think people pay much more attention to the political stuff we're doing now. I don't know if it's just the times, or that there's so much that's able to be parodied recently.

NEWMAN: From a technical standpoint, I see all the hairpieces, and wardrobe, and technology—that's just dazzling to me. When I think about our skits it's like the Stone Age!

The show always pushed boundaries, though ...

NEWMAN: I was the first person to ever say "sucks" on television.

WIIG: Really?

NEWMAN: I was also the first to say "pissed off."

WIIG: That's an honor!

NEWMAN: I had to personally apologize to the NBC censor—but boy, today they pass me by!

Is anything the same?
NEWMAN: The schedule.

WIIG: The norm is to go in at 3 p.m., go home at 7 the next morning.

NEWMAN: It's definitely the domain of the young.

Kristen Wiig gets hammered in "I Didn't Ask For This" (SNL)

Show - I Didn't Ask For This

Host Roger Simms sympathizes with victims of viral videos on the Internet.

Jon Hamm ... Mark Sharon
Paul Brittain ... Pierre
Abby Elliott ... actress/wench
Bill Hader ... actor/blacksmith
Taran Killam ... son
Bobby Moynihan ... Roger Sims
Kristen Wiig ... Maureen O'Hare

Kristen gets hammered. Get it? =^)

Hilarious, clever, and even put in the proper order of which video was the funniest. Classic. Had to have been written by Bobby, who loves to poke fun at Internet and YouTube humor. Classic.

Kristen Wiig is Jennifer Tilly on Back to the Future Anniversary DVD (SNL)

Commercial - Back To The Future 25th Anniversary DVD

Jon Hamm ... Robin Williams
Paul Brittain ... director (voice)
Bill Hader ... Al Pacino
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Bobby Moynihan ... Sam Kinison
Jay Pharoah ... Eddie Murphy
Kristen Wiig ... Jennifer Tilly

This is Kristen's second appearance as Jennifer Tilly. Her first was on 02.23.2008 in "Celebrity Apprentice." Cheri Oteri is the only other one to portray Tilly (in 11.14.1998 as the lead character in "Learning With Jennifer Tilly").

Wow, Kristen really nails Tilly. This is a very impressive impression. The only down side is that it was only one joke.

As far as these impressions go, Jon Hamm takes the cake. Here's how I'd rank them...

1. Jon Hamm ... Robin Williams
2. Jay Pharoah ... Eddie Murphy
3. Kristen Wiig ... Jennifer Tilly
4. Bill Hader ... Al Pacino
5. Bobby Moynihan ... Sam Kinison

Don't get me wrong, Bill did great. But you've got to do more than nail the voice and mannerisms. You've got to make the performance funny, and Jon and Jay did that the best.

Enjoy!

Kristen Wiig gets felt up as Judy Garland in the Vincent Price Halloween Special (SNL)

Vincent has some special guests stop by his haunted house to celebrate Halloween.

Vincent Price's Halloween Special

Jon Hamm ... John F. Kennedy
Fred Armisen ... Liberace
Bill Hader ... Vincent Price
Steve Higgins ... announcer (voice)
Nasim Pedrad ... Candy DeCenzo
Kristen Wiig ... Judy Garland

The audience is mostly not laughing here until the sex jokes came in. Wow.

And yes, Jon Hamm feels up Kristen and Nasim's breasts, though he has a better... um... handle on Nasim. Wow. I think this is the third time Kristen's got felt up on SNL.

And the ending gag with Liberace's sausage. Wow.

Wow. Kristen pitched another skit with Jon Hamm... and got it. Amusing... at times.

Kristen Wiig in Real Housewives of SNL

This was an original "skit" done for the "Women of SNL" special (mostly showing amazing SNL skits from the various women on SNL.

The real women of 8H have reunited with Bravo's Andy Cohen.

So this is a spoof of Real Housewives.

Once again, it's an honor that Kristen Wiig is the only woman in this group that is currently on SNL.

Loraine Newman. Wow. She looks very different but very good. A founding member of the Groundlings and SNL. Amazing. It was also good to see Cheri Oteri again.

Kristen Wiig and John Hamm - Darlique & Barney (SNL)

The duo performs some lounge tunes mixed with some of their jokes and personal drama.

Hilarious! Another great character from Kristen, and she's guaranteed a follow up when John Hamm returns. =^)

On the negative side, this is a little similar to other skits like this that she's done with Will Forte (such as Jackie Snad and Kat & Garth), and lounge singing is something that has been common on SNL (but the best and longest standing have been Ferrell and Gastayer's Culps, a similar husband and wife act that was on SNL an amazing 21 times).

Show The View

Emma Stone ... Lindsay Lohan
Fred Armisen ... Joy Behar
Nasim Pedrad ... Barbara Walters
Kenan Thompson ... Whoopi Goldberg
Kristen Wiig ... Elisabeth Hasselbeck

The ladies discuss bullying, Halloween and talk to special guest, Lindsay Lohan.

I always think Kristen plays Elisabeth in a mean way. I find most of Kristen's impressions as too brutal. What do you think?

The other three (Nasim, Kenan, and Fred) are hilarious. What's great is that SNL's View parody has lasted through two full SNL generations. It's pretty impressive to have the current cast do a show like this just as well as Ferrell's class.

This is Kristen's 6th take on the character. The first time was on 11.01.2008.

Kristen Wiig in "The Women of SNL" special on November 1

Saturday Night Live will air a two-hour tribute to its female cast members Nov. 1. “The Women of SNL” special will include clips (duh), but also new material from Rachel Dratch, Nora Dunn, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Laraine Newman, Cheri Oteri, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Molly Shannon, and Kristen Wiig. Um, Jane Curtin and Julia Sweeney, call your agents!

This special is obviously a follow-up to last year’s hit Betty White episode, and who knows? Maybe the sustained interest in SNL‘s female performers will lead to there being more of them.

From:
http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/10/07/women-of-snl/
==================

What? Laraine Newman? That's awesome! Yeah, I agree at least that Jane Curtin should be in on this. She was an original (with Laraine) and the first female Weekend Update host! She did it right after Chevy Chase and kept doing it (usually with a co-anchor like Dan or Bill) until she left!

Truly an honor for Kristen to be the only one on this list who is currently on the show. That said, it's sort of by default. Abby just got regular status, Nasim is a featured player for her second year now, and it's Vanessa's first year.

Also note that Julia Louis-Dreyfus was the only one on this list who was on the show when Lorne wasn't.

I think I'm most excited about Cheri Oteri! =^)

Kristen Wiig at the bottom of the SNL Power Charts this week

13. Kristin Wiig (8 points): Is Kristin Wiig over? Of course not, but we can’t help but feel like her schtick is starting to run thin, both with Lorne and audiences alike. Her portrayal of the sexy-yet-not Shanna was her only appearance on the show this weekend, which is very strange considering the heavy lifting she’s done as a castmember over the last seven-plus seasons. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.

Is Kristen Wiig more popular than Amy Poehler?

With Molly Shannon readying to throw back a few drinks onstage as Promises, Promises barfly Marge MacDougall, Broadway.com asked fans to choose which Saturday Night Live star you'd like to join Shannon on the Great White Way. The tally is complete, and funny lady Tina Fey ran away with the race, scoring a whopping 42% of votes. While the six-time Emmy winner has yet to make her Broadway debut, the actress/writer/producer's hit TV series 30 Rock is set just around the corner from the theater district in Rockefeller Center.

Following in second came Kristen Wiig, with 18% of votes. The current SNL actress is known for her impressions of Suze Orman, Jamie Lee Curtis and even showbiz great Judy Garland. Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler landed in third place with 11% of votes. Poehler has co-starred with Fey in films such as Mean Girls and Baby Mama and played an attorney defending a controversial musical in Hamlet 2.

Is there a Hoda SNL curse?

Perez sez...

Beware Of The Hoda Curse, SNL Newbies!

So far, two different actresses have portrayed Hoda Kotb opposite Kristen Wiig as Kathie Lee on Saturday Night Live. Both of those actresses were given the axe after one year on the show. So, in what was an usual turn of events for the 17th hour of The Today Show, Kathie Lee posed an insightful question:

Is there a "Hoda Curse" on the show?

Hmm. We think it's certainly possible, but maybe if the next actress commits more to the role, they'll stay around longer. We suggest three bottles of Stoli before rehearsals and an extra one for right before show time. That should get whoever it is into character right quick!

Emma Stone to host SNL

Check out Emma Stone at 2:48 telling Jimmy Fallon last night that she's hosting Saturday Night Live:

She'll host on October 23rd. It's her biggest dream.

"I'm a pretend prostitute... but take your kids!"

It's interesting because she mentioned SNL generically on Jimmy Fallon. She didn't specify if she's a fan of Andy Samberg or Kristen Wiig or any of the other current or past SNL players.

However, in this interview she mentions that she's a big fan of Kristen Wiig and jealous of Abby Elliott:

You want to do SNL?
Don’t start me on that. It’s a dream, it’s a dream of life.

Why don’t you make that happen?
I don’t know, it’s not gonna happen. Whatever, it’s fine. It’s fine, its nothing. It’s just, no, it’s not even like—it’s like, if that ever happened then I wouldn’t have anything to dream about, and then it would all be pointless.

Why don’t you quit movies and try and become a cast member on SNL? Would you rather do that than movies?
Stop it. That’s my dream. I would rather do that than anything in the world.

Wow, I had no idea.
Yeah, I mean I’m insanely crazy about Kristen Wiig and I’m so jealous of Abby Elliott its not even funny. She’s the youngest woman that’s ever been on SNL. She’s twenty one, so we’re like the same age.

The Groundlings and SNL (where Kristen Wiig came from)

What with the addition of Taran Killam (a long-time Groundlings member) to SNL, we wanted to take a deeper-dive look at The Groundlings, and their history with SNL.

The Groundlings are an improvisational comedy troupe based in Los Angeles, California, USA. The troupe was formed by Gary Austin in 1974 and uses an improv format influenced by Viola Spolin to produce sketches and improvised scenes.

The troupe moved into their current location on Melrose Avenue in 1979.

The Groundlings School holds new sessions every six weeks with over 300 students per session, with over 2,000 students per year going through the program. The competitive program consists of 4 levels (Basic, Intermediate, Writing Lab, and Advanced). Participants must be successfully advanced from each level by the instructor. After completing the Advanced level, one may be voted into the Sunday Company, which performs every Sunday at 7:30pm. Members of the Main Company are selected from members of the Sunday Company.

Current Groundlings main members include...

Taran Killam (signed to SNL for this coming season)
Michaela Watkins (let go from SNL before last season)

Here are SNL members who came from The Groundlings...

Abby Elliott
Jimmy Fallon
Will Ferrell
Will Forte
Ana Gasteyer
Phil Hartman
Jan Hooks
Chris Kattan
Jon Lovitz
Laraine Newman (founding member of The Groundlings & SNL)
Conan O'Brien (writer & non-credited cast)
Cheri Oteri
Chris Parnell
Maya Rudolph
Julia Sweeney
Michaela Watkins
Kristen Wiig

Other famous Groundlings alumni...

Adam Carolla
Jennifer Coolidge
Kathy Griffin (Shrek Forever After)
Cheryl Hines (RV)
Lisa Kudrow (Friends)
Phil LaMarr (MadTV)
Michael McDonald (MadTV)
Pat Morita (Karate Kid & Happy Days)
Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman)
Joe Ranft (voice actor for Pixar)
Dax Shepard (Punk'd & When In Rome)

Note 1: Phil Hartman and Paul Reubens were friends during their Groundlings days, and Phil encouraged Paul to put together a pilot for Pee Wee Herman. Phil also appeared on Pee Wee Herman as a fisherman, a frequent guest.

Note 2: Will Ferrell's SNL class was composed of a lot of Groundlings alumni. They must have worked so well together in the comedy troop that it was natural for them to work together on SNL. This group included Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Chris Kattan, Cheri Oteri, and at the tail end of Will's reign on SNL, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell, and Maya Rudolph. (This is similar to when Lorne hired Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Gilda Radner from the Lampoon Show back in 1975.)

New SNL Cast Member - Jay Pharoah

For a little while now, Kenan Thompson has been the only African American SNL cast member, but it looks like that may not be true for much longer. The Comic’s Comic, a blog dedicated to everything related to stand-up/sketch comedy (and the site who actually appears to have broken the news of the previous new cast additions), says Jay Pharoah, a young stand-up comedian from Virginia’s Tidewater, may be joining the cast. Aside from the increase in racial diversity, even more exciting is the fact that Pharoah may bring a new take on President Barack Obama to the table. Though Fred Armisen has done a decent job with the impersonation, he can only do so much with a man who doesn’t really have many outstanding mannerisms or speech characteristics to embellish.

Apparently Pharoah’s casting is pretty much a done deal. (Let’s hope so after being flown to NYC twice for screen tests and meetings with Lorne Michaels.) So this coming season will bring a whole slew of new talent. Below you can check out Pharoah’s comedic stylings, including quite an array of impressions — Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Chris Tucker, Denzel Washington, Barack Obama, Katt Williams and literally dozens more.

I think the coolest thing about his impressions is that the dude plays himself so loose and goofy that he literally transforms into a character. I haven't seen someone do that so well since Andy Kaufman.

Enjoy!
