Is Fred Armisen's Riley character an attempt at Gilly's success?

If you go to her official Web page (or lack thereof):

You'll see that Kristen Wiig has no Twitter, MySpace, or Facebook.
And that means that this Kristen Wiig Twitterer:

PS: I find it strange that the image and text on Kristen's home page were made in Flash. Hmmm. That's like using a factory to bend a paperclip, or using tractor to move a small pebble.

Why we love Kristen Wiig
Check out the slideshow here:
http://www.nbcnewyork.com/entertainment/television/Why-We-Love-Kristen-Wiig-80846432.html
SNL is back with new shows and we can't wait... to see what Kristen Wiig will do next. Wiig joined the cast as a featured player in 2005 and has since become one of the show's most celebrated comediennes.
She has appeared in hundreds of sketches, had some star turns in films and was nominated for an Emmy. Clearly we are not the only ones who love her. Here are a few reasons why...
SHE CHUCKED IT ALL FOR A DREAM: Wiig, an art major, was offered a job doing photo retouching for a plastic surgeon's office. The day before she was supposed to start, she thought "I don't want this to be my life," according to Women's Health. The next day she packed her bags and drove to LA to become an actress.
SHE LOVES SURPRISES: Oh my Gahd.... Oh my Gahhhhhhd! If you didn't watch Surprise Sue repeatedly, quote her constantly or dress up as her for Halloween, then you are in for a surprise of your own.
SHE HAS SOUND FINANCIAL ADVICE: Forget the real Suze Orman. Wiig has money saving tips as well as a best bet for where to spend your money: buying... more... jackets!
SHE HAS CLASSY STYLE: We love the elegant look Wiig sported at the Gotham Independent Film Awards in November 2009.
... AND SASSY STYLE: And Wiig was bold enough to pair it with red tights. Brilliant!
SHE'S NOT AFRAID TO "UG" IT UP: Wiig is an attractive lady, yet she plays along when people turn her into ugly monstrosities...
SHE SAYS YES: Case in point... Before shooting Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Wiig said the director told her, "you're going to look terrible and you're going to always be pregnant." Her response? "Of course I'll do it."
SHE LIKES TARGET: And who doesn't? Wiig herself told Women's Health, "It's clean. They have great things. It's every reason you love a store."
SHE HAS AN AMAZING WEBSITE: You're looking at it. Wiig's website consists of [a] drawing, links to her agency and management company and a message that she doesn't do social media. And that's it.
SHE MOCKS THE HAND THAT FEEDS HER: Wiig's turn as Maggie Mahem in Drew Barrymore's roller derby flick Whip It gave us the gem, "You can never have too much eyeliner. Or LashBlast," spoofing Barrymore's turn as a Cover Girl spokeswoman.
SHE HAS GLAM STYLE: Wiig does glam well, like with this electric blue assymetrical dress matched with a wide patent leather belt, which she wore to the Ghost Town premiere in 2008.
SHE CAN MAKE RICKY GERVAIS LAUGH: It takes a mighty comedic power to make funnyman Ricky Gervais laugh. Wiig does it with ease during a press conference for Ghost Town. What a compliment for someone who thinks Gervais is "beyond genius."
SHE CAN BE A REAL A-HOLE: And we love her for it. Right, babe?
SHE'S NAUGHTY: Wiig's character Gilly isn't afraid to be a bad girl and we dig that. But she still teaches us a valuable lesson: it's OK as long as you say you're sorry. (Gilly also got her very own SNL special: A Very Gilly Christmas.)
SHE WILL GET UP IN IT: Do not mess with Wiig.
SHE HAS CASUAL STYLE: Not only can Wiig go glam, she can do casual in style. The layering, colors and accessories make this look from Sundance 2009 slacker chic.
SHE MAKES KATHIE LEE GIFFORD TOLERABLE: (At least with her impression.) Sorry, Kathie Lee, but Wiig has your number and the guts to put it all out there.
SHE MAKES ROOM FOR NEWBIES: Wiig was a newcomer once, too. When Jenny Slate dropped the f-bomb during her first show, Wiig played it off like nothing happened. After all, Wiig is afraid she'll swear or forget her lines, too, according to A.V. Club.
IN SHORT: EVERYTHING. In 2009, Wiig made EW's list of 25 Funniest Women in Hollywood and she is clearly someone to watch. From her TV and movie roles to her red carpet appearances, we can't wait to see what Wiig does next.

New MacGruber photos from Universal
Universal had released three official photos from MacGruber, a spoof of the TV show “MacGyver” and a spin-off of the recurring bit on “Saturday Night Live.” Will Forte stars as the titular crime fighter, plus Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillipe, and Val Kilmer as Dieter Von Cunth (the “H” is apparently silent).
I was hesitant at first because of SNL’s track record of turning short sketches into feature-length garbage, but an early review of the R-rated movie has me cautiously optimistic. The pre-screening reaction on The Vertex Blog called it “the best SNL film since Wayne’s World back in 1992.”
Official Synopsis:
Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.
In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.
Assembling an elite team of experts–Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)–MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

Caitlin's review of SNL (1/9/10)
"Saturday Night Live" welcomed the new decade with a duo of seasoned "SNL" vets, featuring basketball star Charles Barkley and R&B diva Alicia Keys in the show's first episode of 2010.
Barkley, who last hosted the show in 1993 alongside musical guest Nirvana...
Barkley took a turn poking fun at himself, starring in a skit about getting professional help to fix his golf swing and joking about getting "arrested," a nod to his Jan. 2009 drunk-driving bust...
Barkley also joined "SNL" vets in several show mainstays, playing second banana to Kenan Thompson's trash-talking prison interrogator in "Scared Straight" as he wore a Don King-style gray wig and polyester uniform and joining Kristen Wiig in the "Shanna at the Ski Lodge" sketch...
Keys, who hosted in 2001 with actress Reese Witherspoon, also took her turn on the "SNL" comedy circuit, joining Andy Samberg in the "Booty Call" digital short that saw Keys seduce the flamboyant, socially awkward Samberg over the phone...
Next Saturday's episode will feature "Avatar" star and "SNL" hosting alum Sigourney Weaver and first-time musical guest the Ting Tings.

Kristen Wiig vs Will Ferrell (an SNL editorial)
I have to agree with the critics that it gets a little annoying when SNL plays Kristen Wiig too much.
Part of what makes that annoying is that many of her characters and impressions are similar, and most of them are single characters. She doesn't team up enough. Her team-up characters include Kat and Garth with Fred Armisen (her recent Weekend Update skit, but she's really just trying to follow Fred's made-up song), Jackie Snad and Clancy Bachlerat (Will Forte's weird idea where they are country singers of songs about horribly weird, unfunny topics), Kathy Lee Gifford (against a rotating Hoda; this is really just about Kristen's character), the A-Holes (but they pretty much played it to death by doing it 7 times in two seasons), Jean and Neil (the night out skits with Will Forte; they're okay but not super memorable), and a few great one-time team-ups with hosts that deserve follow-ups (Fran and Freba with Neil Patrick Harris, Justin Timberlake's Classic Peg gives her Target Lady a run for her money, flight attendants with Megan Fox, and "Ode to Tracking Numbers" with Paul Rudd). (Vicky is in the McGruber skits, but that's just supporting Will Forte's single character.)
For example, I never thought Will Ferrell was played too much when he was on, and he was on a lot. The reason is that the vast majority of his characters (especially his most popular ones) were team characters where he played off of other cast members. It also gave his characters a wider variety than Kristen has, because some of his characters were explosive (like Spartan cheerleaders, Roxbury guys, and the yelling father), but some of his characters were implosive (like Dog Show, the Culps, Hot Tub Lovers, and Alex Trebek).
However, most of Kristen's characters and impressions are not team-ups (one woman shows) and are explosive: Trina, Gilly, Judy Grimes, Dooneese (Lawrence Welk Show), Aunt Linda, Michelle Dison (reporter who flirts with women), Penelope, Sue (suprise), the Target Lady, and impressions like Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Garland, Madonna, Nancy Pelosi, and Suze Orman. (And Virginia Horsen is a one-woman show, but I think it's an implosive character.)
Implosive VS Explosive: What's the difference? Basically, an "implosive" character falls apart on the inside and doesn't know how to deal with it. The result is quiet and often hilarious awkwardness. An explosive character loses control and often goes nuts. An explosive character is often "outgoing," extraverted, and doesn't hold back. Basically, it's the difference between being introverted and falling apart vs extraverted and falling apart.

Kathy Lee and Hoda explain the alcohol
Kathie Lee and Hoda Explain How the Alcohol Started Flowing on 'Today' (VIDEO)
At last, the secret stands revealed! And we didn't even have to buy a special Blu-Ray set of the best of the 'Today' (Weekdays, 7AM on NBC) show's fourth hour, complete with a set of wine glasses to start off your morning right. Instead, Kathie Lee Gifford just abruptly announced that for year-end, they should reveal the genesis of the booze on the set of the fourth hour.
"People do ask us that more than anything," co-host Hoda Kotb admitted. Could they have been, perhaps, following our own TVR Awards?
"And it's been blown out of proportion," Gifford added, no doubt referencing at least in part the various skits of them performed on 'Saturday Night Live.' Ironically, if you watched Gifford throughout this explanation, it didn't look like Kristen Wiig was exaggerating those facial expressions as much as we might have thought in her 'SNL' parody.
"We didn't have a drop of alcohol at all on our show," Kotb said, "Until someone named Chelsea Handler came to visit." Handler was on to promote her book 'Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea,' and so they decided to have a drink on set for her.
"Our producers concocted a couple of concoctions for her to concoct," Gifford said with a laugh.
Basically, they had so much fun that day with alcohol on the set that it's since become a signature staple of the show. Clearly the audience response has been positive as well, or they wouldn't still be doing it. If, however, you aren't a fan, you now know who to direct your dissatisfaction toward.
"It's all Chelsea Handler's fault," Gifford concluded.

Kristen Wiig - the highlight of the Vincent Price show?
ZOË RICE: I give this another mediocre rating. Kristen Wiig’s Katherine Hepburn and James Franco’s James Dean (no doubt the impetus for this sketch was his award-nominated portrayal of Dean) were the highlights here. I liked it better than the frat boy sketch, but I’m getting a bit tired of SNL relying on gay jokes and gags.
HOWARD MEGDAL: Ah, I always love the Vincent Price stuff. And when does Wiig get her own variety show? She is Carol Burnett, people.
STEVE MURPHY: One of my favorite sketches, back after a pretty long break, and it was just as good as I remember it. I love how Price’s guests always completely ruin everything (though Franco as James Dean didn’t really cause any direct problems) and Liberace always ends up going way, way too far. Good for a laugh, though maybe not as huge as when, say, Alec Baldwin hosted and did this sketch as Richard Burton.

Kristen Wiig's Dooneese - is it creepy in a good way?
ZOË RICE: SNL rarely opens with this type of recurring sketch–the Lawrence Welk show, with those 4 singing sisters–and the host, James Franco appeared in it, another rarity. I get the sense this skit might not have been the original opener, but I don’t care. I loved it. I laughed heartily. Eunice is so friggin’ funny. With those little mutant hands and all their hilarious antics! James Franco held his own and made me psyched for the rest of the show.
HOWARD MEGDAL: I have to say, I do enjoy this skit. Obviously, skewering Lawrence Welk isn’t particularly timely, and it does play oddly as the opener- but I’m glad for it, and James Franco announced his presence with authority.
STEVE MURPHY: I think the only reason this was so jarring is because the cold open is usually political and usually sucks. Overall this one was a success for me. I don’t understand why this sketch even needs a Lawrence Welk reference, really. I’m with Howard, the Lawrence Welk Show isn’t topical enough to lampoon. Luckily James Franco was fantastic, and Kristen Wiig was intensely creepy as usual as the mutant fourth sister (even if her lines weren’t as funny as usual). Franco’s gonna be a great host, I can feel it!
